Scouting and Climbing
Background
During the summer of 1995, youth participants in the National Junior Leader Instructor Camp held at Philmont Scout Ranch identified climbing as an increasingly popular activity. They requested the development of program literature by the Boy Scouts of America in support of climbing. In May 1997, the first edition of the Climbing merit badge pamphlet was released and proved to be extremely popular. In September 1997, a national climbing task force was organized, and members met for the first time to discuss suggestions they received regarding climbing techniques and appropriate safety measures. Their vision was to develop climbing literature and training for units and councils. As a result, Climb On Safely was developed and made available in fall 1998. Similar to Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat, Climb On Safely is designed to orient adult leaders with the proper procedure for organizing and managing BSA climbing/rappelling activities for their units. In the two years following Climb On Safely's introduction, the climbing task force developed additional materials for use by Scouts and leaders. These included the Climb On Safely Training Outline, a revised

Long ago, climbing massive mountain peaks and huge sheer cliffs was considered to be the only type of climbing. Shorter routes were considered as a good form of training for these longer epic style routes. With time, shorter route climbing became more popular as people looked for a more convenient form of climbing. These shorter routes such as bouldering and sport climbing have become the fastest areas of climbing. Standards have increased ten-fold because of the concentrated difficulty of these shorter routes. Climbing has now become more accessible and safe with the introduction of bolting and indoor climbing walls with artificial faces. Now anyone can try a strenuous overhang or roof in the knowledge that they can get up and leave whenever they want. And this is where you fit in..... Can you see yourself as a trippy, farout, hey..way cool "I'd like to do that" type of person?...Well then, the climbing club is definitely for you...Not only is it an opportunity to get higher than you've ever been before, it is also a chance to be a member in one of the biggest sports clubs in the college. For a mere 3 euro membership fee, you will be entitled to go on any of our club trips throughout the year, free use of our indoor wall, free instruction and free use of some of the more manky climbing shoes in our club locker....that'll easily be the one thing each day that scares you...Not only that, you will also be entitled to 10% off in The Great Outdoors and The Outdoor Adventure Store.

http://www.cressbrook.co.uk/walks/climb.htm
Rock-climbing in the Peak began with early pioneers in the 1890s, and has now expanded so that every weekend there are thousands of climbers on the crags. The Peak has a wide range of crags both large and small with well over 10000 recorded climbs - probably no-one knows exactly how many - and being close to several large population centres means that it is a popular place to climb. Historically the gritstone crags were the first to be explored, and those where access was not restricted by gamekeepers - Laddow Rocks and Castle Naze for example - were those where the much of the first climbing was done, though crags such as Stanage which were officially 'out of bounds' also had many routes recorded. This state of affairs continued until the 1950s, when a post-war generation emerged and simultaneously, public access to the majority of crags became possible. The number of climbers increased and, led by legendary figures such as Nat Allen, Joe Brown and Don Whillans, standards soared and the number of recorded routes increased dramatically. By the late 1960s the gritstone crags had been widely explored and attention turned to the limestone crags - which had hitherto been largely avoided, being regarded as either too steep or too loose. Many of the first limestone routes used one or more pitons but it was gradually realised that these could be climbed without aid and in the 1980s a large number of steep technical limestone routes were added to the list of Peak climbs. More recently some extremely technical routes have been added where majority opinion is that the use of bolts for protection is both justified and necessary.
