K2 - THE SAVAGE MOUNTAIN
The climbing history of K2, Chogori, Mount Godwin-Austen, from the first try in 1902, until the Italian success in 1954.
1856 - DISCOVERED AND NAMED
K2 was first described by the British colonel T.G. Montgomery in 1856 while doing a survey of the area. He named the peaks in the order he saw them, K1, K2, K3, etc. The K stands for Karakorum. Today K2 is the only major mountain that still uses it's surveyor's notation name as its most common name. K2 with it's height of 8,611 meters is the second highest mountain in the world and is regarded as one of the hardest to climb.
1902 - THE FIRST TRY
In 1902, a six-man group of European climbers, led by the Englishman Eckenstein, headed for K2. They chose the time before the monsoon. They first crossed the Baltoro glacier, which with it's length of 67 kilometres is the world's third largest. The expedition reached the mountain's foot and planned to make the attempt directly from the south over the Southeast Ridge, but when in place they came to the conclusion that the Northeast Ridge is probably much easier. Several attempts were made without success. They only reached 6,600 metres - this group had an unrealistic goal, and didn't realise their limits. At this time, early in the century, they had no idea of the difficulties in ascending such a high mountain.

Card Games: Climbing Games
In climbing games, each player in turn must play a higher card (or combination of cards) than the previous player. A player who cannot or does not wish to beat the previous play can pass. This continues for as many rounds as necessary until someone makes a play which no one will beat. That player wins the "trick" and leads to another one. Because players can pass, their cards are not used at an equal rate and some will run out before others. Often the aim is to get rid of cards, but sometimes it may be to win cards in "tricks". Climbing games, like trick taking games and beating games , must have a card ranking order. Often higher cards beat lower ones irrespective of suit. Usually it is possible to play combinations as well as single cards, so these too must be ranked. Climbing games are quite widespread in the orient, especially China. Only in recent years have they become known in the West. Games include Zheng Shangyou, Big Two, Asshole (Trouduc, Bum) In many games of this group a mock social status, ranging (for example) from emperor to peasant, is awarded to the players according to how well they do on a hand. This status is then perpetuated in subsequent hands by making the losers give away their best cards to the winners, as well as suffering other indignities. This social dimension appears not only in climbing games but also in certain trick taking games such as the Russian game

    136. The Prusik Knot
Discussion, comments, and tips regarding use for both sailing and climbing. History.
    http://fmg-www.cs.ucla.edu/geoff/prusik_knot.html
    The Prusik Knot
The Prusik Knot is a variation of the rolling hitch. Some people use it for mast climbing. Since it's not in The Ashley Book of Knots, I tied one around my pen and scanned it. This page used to contain a description written by me, but then Mark Anderson of the vessel Riparia actually did it and wrote a much better description, so with his permission I've replaced my version with his, slightly edited. I've added a few comments and clarifications of my own at the end. Going Up the Mast by Mark Anderson Climbing the mast is a useful skill, can sometimes be fun, sometimes necessary to repair something, and sometimes be lifesaving for you and your boat. There was a thread on going up the mast on rec.boats.cruising in the fall of 1996 that could be referred to, but here's my technique. Remember that going up the mast is inherently dangerous. Knots could untie, lines could break, cleats could break, you could fall out of your Bos'n's chair. Then you'd fall and perhaps be killed, paralyzed, break something, or even damage your boat. Try this at your own risk. I'd suggest securing all knots tied with the ends of the line by seizing or securely taping the ends to the standing part to minimize the risk of line creep and the knots coming loose. I rarely have anyone to hoist me up, so previously I'd used a long tackle. It's getting harder every time, and I don't like the rats nest of 150 ft. of line on deck, (particularly envisioning doing this at sea), so I was determined to try another way. Being a person who loves simplicity and frugality, I avoided buying Jumar ascenders, and succeeded, after some frustrating trials, in using Prusik knots, following a climber friend's description.
