"The Revolution was the work of climbers and cavers."
Fidel Castro, living icon and tireless voice of the Cuban Revolution This site explores the connection of Cuba and Climbing. It is a noncommercial site to provide information about Cuba. There is specific information on rock climbing and conservation. The general traveler or readers will find pages and links to almost everything available in print and on the web about Cuba. This site tries for objectivity and fairness. The principal bias is for readers to make their own judgments. Cuba provokes opinions, taking-sides. Ours is decidedly with the Cuban people. Cubans are blunt, witty, spontaneous, resilient, and openhearted. They shout across courtyards and streets every detail of their daily emotions and calamities. It's in-your-face living; not for the timid or bashful. The island's music reflects its people's vitality and driving physicality. Cuba is unspoiled and un-commercialized, even undeveloped for half a century. Colonial buildings, villages, entire towns are crumbling and decaying, but still there. A natural landscape of the world's finest tobacco farms and vast sugar cane plantations among lush forests of palms and pines, towering cliffs, and swamps and cays.

2003 Ridge Runner Report
President's Message April 2004
Hello Fellow Hikers, Even though it's muddy out there the warm weather is very welcome. I spent the coldest part of the winter in sunny Senegal and was startled to return to sub zero temperatures. People have started venturing outside again, trying to reverse the affects of cabin fever. The KTA and ATC are being reorganized. KTA is trying to develop the position of executive director. ATC continues its reorganization with information gained from the Strategic Planning Summit. BMECC member Peter Crab informs me of potential development along the trail just south of route 309. We may have a fight on our hands. I have passed the information on to the ATC. April will mark the beginning of my second year as BMECC president. I am very proud of the accomplishment of the club in this time even if I cannot claim responsibility for any of them. Edwina Speidel has revitalized the Invested Funds Committee and, with help of new member Janice Reich and the rest of the committee, is well on the way to getting our finances in order. Joan Shollenberger, after moving to a new house, has reorganized the Corridor Management Committee. Most of that work had fallen upon her husband, George, in the absence of a Chairperson. Don Grube is the one man Archives Committee and is sorting and copying material to donated to the Berks County Historical Society. Gene McCarney, after stepping down as president, took the reigns of the Public Relations Committee and with the help of Linda Enders and other has been doing a good job of getting our name out.

General Information Mount Rainier, the most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States, offers an exciting challenge to the mountaineer. This 14,410 foot active volcano is successfully climbed each year by thousands of people Reaching the summit requires a vertical elevation gain of more than 9,000 feet over a distance of eight or more miles. Climbers must be in good physical condition and well prepared. Proper physical conditioning can offset the effects of fatigue that lead to mistakes and injuries. Weather, snow, and route conditions can change rapidly and can make the difference between a pleasant and rewarding experience or tragedy. Obtain a current weather forecast before beginning a climb. Turn back if weather conditions deteriorate. Severe winter-like storms on the mountain are not uncommon during the summer. Use this website to gather updated information on weather route conditions , crevasses, rockfall, avalanche information and Climbing Permits, Fees, and Regulations

What You Can Do Current Closures Safety Emergencies ... Guides Yosemite is one of the world's greatest climbing areas. Climbers here can enjoy an endless variety of challenges- from the sustained crack climbs of the Merced river canyon to pinching crystals on sun drenched Tuolumne domes to multi-day aid climbs on the big walls of the Valley. Yosemite is not just a climber's playground, however- Its walls and crags are an integral part of a larger ecosystem, protected as wilderness, that was set aside for people to enjoy in a natural state for generations to come. As the number of climbers visiting the park has increased through the years, the impacts of climbing have become much more obvious. Some of those impacts include: soil compaction, erosion, and vegetation loss in parking areas, at the base of climbs, and on approach and descent trails, destruction of cliffside vegetation
and lichen, disturbance of cliff-dwelling animals, litter, water pollution from improper human waste disposal, and the visual blight of chalk marks, pin scars, bolts, rappel slings, and fixed ropes. Many of these impacts can be eliminated or
