Travel Guide MOUNT KENYA MOUNTAIN CLIMBING No trip to Kenya is complete without a view or better, an ascent of Africa's second tallest peak, Mount Kenya. It is at 5,199 m (17,057 ft), taller than Blanc, The Matterhorn, The Rockies, The Sierras, and most of the peaks of the Himalayas and Caucasus. Composed of a huge volcanic base where the outer mantle and crater have eroded away, Mount Kenya has seven primary peaks, and a series of subsidiary cones scattered about its crest.
Climbing Lenana is one of the mountain experiences of the grand climb; a view of all Kenya awaits one at the top. At dusk, the sunrise across the vast plains and the hills of Africa will stay with you all your life. Mount Kenya is visible from far, its peaks usually covered with clouds by noon but often glittering free at early mornings or just before sunset.
There are four main routes up Lenana. Sirimon Track is the longest, and driest route, much of it through thick rain forest and fabulous moorlands with long views of the peak. Noted for its wildlife, Sirimon begins 13 km (8 miles) east of Nanyuki before the bridge crossing the Sirimon River and Timau. The most direct and popular, though less scenic is the Naro Moru route. Its advantage is you can stay at Naro Moru River Lodge. The lodge’s lovely cedar cabins are spaced among giant podocarpus tree, green lawns, garden, and along the south bank of Naro Moru River.

Desert Rock Climbing
Sheer Fear!
By Lynn M. Bremner
If you want to experience an outdoor sport which challenges both your mental and physical capabilities, rock climbing is it. I recently participated in a basic 2- day rock climbing class offered by Joshua Tree Rock Climbing School. I found it to be one of the most challenging adventures I have ever experienced.
Taking the First Step
When I first decided to sign up for the rock climbing class, I was concerned about how high we would be climbing during the course. I regularly hike, bike, walk, horseback ride, rollerblade and run, so I was confident in my physical capabilities. What worried me was my fear of heights. I decided to call the school and get some more details about their program before I made the final decision to sign up. After talking with Michelle, who schedules all of the classes and is an avid rock climber herself, I learned that approximately half of the students who sign up for their classes are women. I also learned that most people who take the classes do not have any previous climbing experience. Michelle reassured me that I didn't need to climb any higher than I was comfortable, so I signed up for the two-day Basic Rock Weekend Course, which costs $145.
Day 1: Ground School
The students were instructed to meet at Turtle Rock in the Hidden Valley Picnic Area located in the north end of Joshua Tree National Park. As I drove into the park towards Hidden Valley, I was mesmerized by the huge boulder outcroppings and the unique Joshua Trees that were abundantly scattered throughout the park. Mojave Yucca, creosote and other common desert shrubs covered the sandy ground, leaving only large boulders and rocks piles uncovered.

35. BLM Wyoming Lander Field Office Baldwin Creek Climbing Area
This climbing area has about 50 established rock climbs on Bighorn dolomite ranging in difficulty from 5.11 to 5.14.
http://www.wy.blm.gov/lfo/rec/baldwincrk.htm
Text version Updated March 24, 2004 The Baldwin Creek Climbing Area has about 50 established rock climbs ranging in difficulty from 5.11 to 5.14. The average difficulty of these climbs exceeds those of two of the other popular rock climbing areas near Lander-Sinks Canyon and Wild Iris. The rocks of interest to climbers make up the middle member of the Bighorn dolomite, a geologic formation of Ordovician age. The main body of the formation was deposited in a warm shallow sea between 470 and 450 million years ago. Dolomite is similar to limestone (calcium carbonate) but is much richer in magnesium. Factors influencing sedimentation were probably constant for a long time because the cliffs are very uniform in composition, texture and color. They have few cracks or other flaws, and as a result, they provide uniformly difficult rock climbing opportunities.
Directions
The Baldwin Creek Climbing Area is located about 15 miles west of Lander, Wyoming. To get there from downtown Lander, follow U.S. Highway 287 (Main Street) west and then north until its intersection with Baldwin Creek Road just past the Lander High School. Turn left (west) and travel about seven miles to where the Baldwin Creek Road ends and the Shoshone Lake Road begins (BLM Road 2202). Travel up the switchbacks, pass through Mormon Basin, and continue on the Shoshone Lake Road for an additional 6.5 miles. A 4x4 or other high ground-clearance vehicle is recommended. The parking area and trailhead are on the left (south) side of the road. The parking area is not developed but shows evidence of parking use during the summer.
