126. Cave Diving In Cave Country, Florida
The first thing you should know about cave diving is that it is not for everyone. In cave diving, having a ‘clear head’ is critical.

Diving in Cave Country, Florida
Florida has some of the finest submerged caves anywhere in the world. Cave divers come to tiny northern Florida towns with names like Mayo and Luraville from all over the world. Northern Florida is commonly referred to as Cave Country and if you want to dive here, there are a few things you need to know. The first thing you should know about cave diving is that it is not for everyone. Cave diving requires a very specific temperament (basically, you have to be nuts), is physically demanding, requires a lot of expensive equipment and training, and is potentially lethal. Most people are not suited to be cave divers; if you think you are, read on, and I’ll explain the basics. Before you even think about diving in a cavern or cave, you need training; lots of it. Many open-water divers have died in submerged caves due to lack of training. Properly trained cave divers, using the correct equipment, and following the established safety rules almost never get hurt in caves.

The unique dive experience
The Yucatan peninsula was originally under the ocean and the region's limestone foundation is fossilized coral beds and ocean floor. There are no above ground rivers in this area, all of the ground water sinks through the porous limestone and travels to the sea in underground rivers. Parts of the limestone weakened over time and collapsed, leaving sinkholes filled with water - a cenote During the ice ages, portions of the underground rivers dried up and water dripping through the limestone left mineral deposits in beautiful formations. Decorations - stalactites and stalagmites - formed in the caves and caverns, and were covered with water when the rivers began flowing once again. Specially trained cave divers enter these cave systems through the cenote entrances.
Cave diving - specially trained divers ONLY
There are over 1 million feet of explored cave passages in the area South of Cancun. These systems are large, relatively shallow and highly decorated with limestone formations. To cave divers, this means long bottom times, virtually unlimited dive sites to explore, and beautiful dives. You can get a glimpse into a cave diver's world at the IMAX movie Journey into Amazing Caves which features local cave diver and dive instructor

128. Cavern Diving In Cenote Freshwater Sinkholes In Mexico
People die from scuba diving in caverns and caves without training. See the National Association for cave diving or the cave diving page for more information.

Cavern tours - open water divers
Open water divers can go in groups of 4 with a certified cavern guide. Divers wear their normal open water gear, but unlike cave divers, cavern divers always stay within sight of natural daylight. There are cavern certification courses, and unless you take one you should not dive in any cavern without a qualified guide.

January 2002 Caves: Diving ambiance: Cave diving ambiance, bubbles Around the world, in places as far flung as Bermuda, Australia, the Galapagos Islands, deep inside the earth you can find ancient caves filled with salt water. For scientists in search of unknown life, exploring the inky darkness of these underwater chambers can be a challenging and rewarding experience. I'm Jim Metzner, and this is the Pulse of the Planet. "The problem in cave diving is that we have a solid rock roof over our head at all times. In open water diving if anything fails with your equipment you simply ascend to the surface. In a cave this isn't possible. The only way out of the cave, is typically the way we entered the cave." "Often times we find enormous rooms or huge tunnels, bigger than the biggest subway tunnel. Water is essentially air clear, and how far we see is limited only by the brightness of our lights. We get a deep blue color, an incredible blue color that permeates the cave. We see magnificent stalactites and stalagmites that have been preserved for tens of thousands of years underwater. We see animals, tiny animals, forms of life that no human has ever seen before. There's an excitement, a thrill in this diving, that is literally indescribable."

130. Two Idiots Go Cave Diving
I wrote the following story ten years ago (when I knew considerably less about cave diving than I do now). Two Idiots Go cave diving. by Howard Hall.
http://www.howardhall.com/stories/cave_diving.html
Note: In October 1999 I was hired to film a cave diving sequence for a MacGillivray Freeman IMAX film scheduled to be released this winter. The film, Journey Into Amazing Caves , includes scenes filmed deep within the spectacular caves submerged beneath the Yucatan Peninsula. I found the cave divers I worked with to be not only sane, but some of the most skilled divers I have ever dived with. The experience changed my long-standing view that all cave divers are completely mad. I wrote the following story ten years ago (when I knew considerably less about cave diving than I do now). It serves to demonstrate the consequences of many things cave divers have told me never to do. The following story does not reflect my current view of cave diving or those who engage in the practice

Underwater speleology is a compulsion that I have enjoyed great success in resisting during my two decades of sport diving. And due to this Herculean strength of will, I have managed to learn almost nothing about the affliction.
