T HE THING that immediately distinguishes recreational divers from cave divers is their equipment. Bear in mind, it takes a lot more than just highly specialized equipment to be a cave diver. WHEN DIVERS use common sense and follow important safety rules, diving in overhead environments can be nearly as safe as diving in open water. However, when divers fail to follow these rules, the results are often tragic. Find out more

May 31, 2000 - Since putting this essay online, I've received a large number of email. Many have agreed with the sentiments, a few have disagreed with the tone of the message. I've decided to take on the task of adding another feature to this page, it's what I call "The Body Count" page. I will be adding any news articles (or other information) I can get my hands on about cave diving fatalities on this page. The sole purpose of "The Body Count Page" is to remind you, the reader, about the serious nature of cave diving. With that said, I bring you to...
4:04 - Cave Divers Corner - Whoops - It's gone!
I used to have a web-site called "Cave Divers Corner". Since it hasn't been updated in over a year I decided to delete the stagnant pages. This doesn't mean that you can't find any information on cave diving here. Well, I guess it really means you can't. If you feel the need to go into an underwater cave, you need to get your head examined. Cave diving is the worlds most dangerous sport, failure to perform it properly can be fatal - if you fuck up you can die. This does not mean I'm against the hobby, I just don't believe people who claim there's such a thing as "safe cave diving" - that's like saying "almost pregnant," it's just not true. Don't be fooled by the BS that some training agencies espouse, cave diving (and technical diving in general), is not for everyone. People who have no business participating in the sport die each year.

Florida Cave Country
Within www.FloridaCaveDiving.com you will find individual webpages for most of the north central Florida spring cave systems. The year 2000 brought a drought that significantly lowered the Florida aquifer. Many of the cave systems have a cavern area for cavern certified divers. Divers MUST have cavern certification to dive the cavern areas and cave certification to dive the cave systems.
The main training agencies for cave certification are the NSS/CDS, NACD and GUE. Their links are below. I have included 2 avi clips from dives in Devil's Ear, one is video exiting past Junction Rock, Cornflakes and through Keyhole and the Lips. The second video clip is a jump from the Beetle tunnel out the the main line and then jumping back onto the upstream entrance of Roller Coaster. The video pages take a few minutes to load but are worth the wait!
Many springs have cave systems with upstream and downstream passages. The Florida limestone has given way and collapsed to cause sink holes which often open to the aquifer itself. Early April 2001 brought enough rain to blow out most of the caves except Devil's Ear, Manatee and Jackson Blue. However, the Florida aquifer is still below its normal level. For the latest updates on the Spring's conditions, check out J. Hurley's Extended Range on the Cave Diver's Forum.

NSS-CDS [National Speleological Society - Cave Diving Section] This is an in depth course spanning six to seven days with 12 hours of lecture and a minimum of 15 cave dives using double tanks. The student will dive a wide variety of cave systems featuring different passageway configurations, variable flow, silt and visibility. Proper techniques for these more complex diving scenarios will be taught in a progressive and safe way. Topics covered will include: emergency procedures, off shoot passageways, circuits and traverses, restrictions and decompression procedures. The use of oxygen, Nitrox and computers will also be discussed. There is no open water program available that can prepare divers for the cave environment. The skills learned in this course can be applied to all aspects of sport and technical diving and are a absolute must for the cave environment. In addition, an attitude of continual learning, self evaluation and mature judgment will be instilled in the student. Purpose: To develop minimum skills needed for safe cave diving with twin backmounted tanks.

The NACD philosophy of safe cave diving is based on a system of checks and balances to insure that NACD standards are maintained in each course.
http://www.safecavediving.com/nacdtra.asp
Training Home Upcoming Events Contact Us News ... Instructor Courses THE NACD PHILOSOPHY: Quality Training, Safe Techniques, and Respect for the sub aquatic cave environment.
The goal of the NACD is not to encourage people to cave or cavern dive. The responsibility of the organization is to aid interested divers in becoming safe cavern or cave divers and to discourage those who may not meet minimum standards. The NACD philosophy of safe cave diving is based on a system of checks and balances to insure that NACD standards are maintained in each course.
A Strong Diving Partner Philosophy. The NACD strongly advocates diving with a partner as the best approach to safe cave diving. This system is one, which unites two or more individuals into an effective dive team. A partner is a member of a team who, in case of emergency, provides both emergency equipment, and the emergency gas supply. The divers must recognize individual strengths and weaknesses, create an attitude of mutual trust and honesty, and avoid personality differences to maximize team safety.
Pre-Dive Planning and Post Dive Critiques. A safe cave dive is totally dependent upon sensible dive planning based on common sense and good judgment. A dive plan does not set objectives; rather it delineates maximum guidelines for each dive. Preparation and planning for a cave dive must take into consideration the equipment, training, experience and abilities of each team member. Constructive critiques after the dives are equally important in order to allow the cave divers to mature as a team.

CAVE DIVING - BRITISH STYLE
B Schofield, Dave Ryall. M Here are some things that we would tell anyone thinking of going cave-diving in the UK - things we think they should know... "We have even put half inch galvanised steel chain in one cave, as the floods just kept eating 11mm caving rope!" Virtually all cave-diving sites are on private land. This means that visitors must get the permission of the landowner before they visit. Some landowners have installed physical barriers (eg. locked gates) to prevent access, and may treat trespassers on their land to a close-up view of the wrong end of a 12-bore! At some sites it may be that the landowner does not care if people want to visit the cave (or indeed, they might prefer not to know of such a visit) but most of them just like to be asked nicely for permission to visit the caves. Ignoring such etiquette may result in the cave being closed permanently - guaranteeing you the hostility of all the cave divers in the UK! For the safety and convenience of others, any diver who finds the lines in the sump in a different condition to those previously published, should notify the changes to the Editor for inclusion in the Newsletter.
