Kickboxing is a form of the martial art of karate that has recently grown in popularity due to its great aerobic benefits and self-defense skills. The origins of kickboxing can be found to date back two thousand years in Far East Asia. Kickboxing as we know it today developed under various influences. The first time anything resembling kickboxing was seen, was in the USA in the early 1970`s and was introduced as 'Full Contact Karate'. A new generation of martial art practitioner's disillusioned with the traditional martial arts like karate wanted to experience full contact bouts fought to the knockout. In some of the earlier tournaments the rules where unclear with no clear weight divisions. The development of specialized protective equipment and regulation came from a new controlling body, the PKA, which also created a defined set of rules and clear weight divisions. Kicks were only scored if they landed above the waist. Kicking below the waist was considered a foul, of course today this is allowed under standard kickboxing rules, while above the waist kicking only, remains under the full contact karate rules. In September 1974 in Los Angeles, the first ever world championships of full contact karate were hosted. The bouts took place on mats (no ring) and it was only late in the 1970's that the sport moved into the ring. Initially there were only four divisions. The first World Champions where Jeff Smith, Isuena Duenas, Joe Lewis and Bill Wallace, some of whom became legendary figures in the sport.

by Ann E. Boehler I've spent the past hour weaving, jabbing, punching, and kicking. I'm drenched in sweat, my hair is plastered to my forehead, and my cheeks are flushed. No, I haven't just wrestled the remote from my boyfriend, I've just finished a cardio kickboxing class. In the world of the physically fit, kickboxing is the biggest thing to hit gyms since padded biking shorts. But if you're like me, active but a little less than coordinated, you may have avoided these classes at your gym and opted instead, for the all too familiar classes (read: step, step, and more step). But as I discovered, not only is cardio kickboxing a whole lot more fun than endless sequences of U-turns and basic steps, it's a full-body, highly aerobic workout that gets you in great shape, faster than you can say grapevine.
What's It All About?
Cardio kickboxing classes vary from gym to gym but the basic format is generally the same: a series of drills set to music including shadow boxing, various types of kicks, push-ups, jump rope, jumping jacks, shuffling, and punching/kicking combinations. In some classes, instructors use props such as jump ropes, gloves, and speed bags, and in others everything is simulated. Unlike typical aerobics classes, there is no complicated choreography to grasp or intricate routines to commit to memory. What's more, most classes change from week to week, so you're always challenged and never bored. Kickboxing has slowly evolved into the increasingly popular gym workout it is today. According to Dave Fox, founding director of Gorilla Sports, a gym in San Francisco, boxing was first introduced into aerobics classes. Then, kicking moves borrowed from martial arts were added to work the lower body as well. The result: cardio-kickboxing classes as we know them.

Doing either an aerobics workout, i.e. running, stairmaster, stationary bike, etc. or an anerobic workout such as lifting weights, Nautilus, calisthenics, etc. will not give you the best or quickest overall fitness results. You need to do both. If you are a runner, for example, you can choose to do a little bit less running if you add some strength training several times per week. You will also find that you will feel stronger on your runs. Conversely, if you like to focus on lifting, your muscles will be more pronounced and you will get more definition if you add some cardio. Personally, I find these types of workouts too "one-dimensional".
Why not get your cardio and resistance workouts in the same session?
Total-Body Exercise
You must exercise your entire body not just specific body parts. "If spot reduction worked, people who chew gum would have skinny faces", says Covert Bailey. Men with love handles and some excess fat over the ab muscles attempt to do more crunches to reduce their mid section. This may actually increase the size of the waist if done without a cardio component in an overall exercise program. Everyone has ab muscles. Some are more developed than others, but in order to achieve the coveted washboard effect, the excess fat covering them up, which varies from individual to individual, must be reduced so that the abs can be seen. Women generally complain the most about their hips and thighs.
