Spaniards have for centuries enjoyed the spectacle of a matador taking on a bull with sword and a cape, but the practice provokes harsh criticism from many in the European Union. "I'm delighted that we are the first town council to take a stand on such a delicate and difficult subject," Mayor Joan Clos said in comments broadcast by Cadena Ser radio. The vote passed by 21 votes to 15. However, bullfighting, more popular in southern Spain than in cosmopolitan Barcelona, will not be banned in the city because that decision rests with regional authorities, Cadena Ser said. "The vote is a giant step forward for animal welfare and will help lead the way to what could be the beginning of the end of bullfighting in Spain," said Leah Garces, head of campaigns for the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

hat follows is not intended as a defense of Spain's "Fiesta Nacional," nor as justification. As Ernest Hemingway noted in "Death in the Afternoon," information will be provided. You will have to make up your own mind whether or not you wish to view or follow the art and study of tauromaquia.
The bullfight has its origins from experience, from the observation of the semi-wild natural state of most bulls - especially the "semental," the seed bulls. Like virile males of other species, the semental find interruption of their pursuit of what pleases them to be aggravating at least and enraging at worst.
According to lore, horseback riders were the first to notice that bulls would be annoyed by anything in sight that moved - especially something that, by not being frightened off, appeared to be a challenge.
Rejoneros, or bullfighters on horseback, such as the Domecqs, or Fermin Borques, can still be seen today demonstrating their skill and the superb training of their horses. Often during the large fiestas, like San Isidro in Madrid, the weeks of bullfighting are interspersed with occassional rejoneros.

Bullfighting Major Tourist Attraction in S. Korea By Kim Hyun
Do Hui-hyeon, 18, proudly caresses his three-year-old bull, set to fight other bulls in a tournament in Uiryeong.
CHEONGDO, South Korea, April 30 (Yonhap) One morning recently, Do Hui-hyeon, 18, got much excited at the thought of traveling to Uiryeong, a rural town about an hour's drive from here, to see his bull compete in a bullfighting tournament.
"I am thrilled. This is the one I've cooked for and climbed mountains with," Do said, proudly watching his three-year-old bull munching grass in its pen.
The high school junior was given a day off from school, promising his teacher that he would help his parents handle the 700-kilogram behemoth. His bull was to compete with 70 other rivals for a top prize of US$34,600 in the town, some 400 kilometers from Seoul.
The Uiryeong tournament is one of South Korea's traditional bullfighting events that have caught on in recent years, drawing tourists from home and abroad. Once a village entertainment between farmers, bullfighting has become a major tourist attraction in rural towns that involves millions of dollars of investments and entrepreneurial management.
A 10-century-old tradition, Korean bullfighting involves two bulls in combat, unlike the Spanish-style spectacle having a matador kill the bull.

Bullfighting is very typical in some parts of Spain. It's called "The National Festival." It's the way that many cities and villages celebrate their main festivals. There is not a good festival in these cities if there is not a bullfight. The place where a bullfight is celebrated is always a round arena. The most important characteristic of the bullfight is that the bullfighter has to fight the bull until he kills it with a sword. Each bullfight has three parts. First, the bullfighter fights with a cape. When the bull, which is very strong, enters the arena; the bullfighter tries to make the bull tired in order to make it lose strength.

Barcelona moves towards ban on bullfighting
By David Harrison October 30, 2003 Print this article Email to a friend Ernest Hemingway will be turning in his grave: Barcelona is planning to deliver the coup de grace to bullfighting. Hemingway had a lifelong love affair with bullfighting and wrote evocatively of its "spiritual intensity". But public opinion in Spain's second city has swung sharply against the ancient spectacle, and talk of a ban is rife in the corridors of the city council and the Catalan parliament. A senior member of Barcelona's ruling Catalan Nationalist Party said that it was "only a matter of time" before an official ban was proposed and said that bullfighting could disappear from the city "within a few years". Opponents argue that the slaughter of more than 100 bulls a year for public entertainment is anachronistic and incompatible with Barcelona's ambition to become one of the world's leading cities for arts and culture. Animal welfare campaigners want bullfighting banned by the end of this year because they say that it will taint the 2004 Universal Forum of Culture, a UNESCO festival that Barcelona is hosting. Bullfighting has already been halted in several Catalonian towns, and in June the regional parliament became the first in Spain to ban children under 14 from attending corridas de toro.

On Sunday afternoon, at about ten minutes before 4 PM local time, in bullrings all over Spain and Mexico, matadors kneel in arena chapels and pray to La Virgen de la Macarena to protect them. For precisely at 4 PM, a bugle will blow and they will go forth to meet their destiny. Moments later, a gate swings open and a two-thousand pound bull bred to kill comes charging in. The matadors stare either straight ahead or down at the dirt. Many continue to mouth silent prayers. Earlier, following the matadors and the banderillos, have come the picadors on padded horses, lances pointed skyward. As they draw close to the barrera , they all tip their hats to the dignitaries , then slide behind the shoulder-high protective barricades that shield them off from the arena itself. The matadors, their Trajes de Luces sparkling in the sun, confer with their managers while swinging their capes to test the wind. The banderilleros , who will be the first to test the bull, move to the opposite side of the ring and along with the senior matador, await the first bull. When the beast finally enters, the

    Border Sports: Bullfighting Objective:
Students will understand the cultural significance and meaning of the bullfight. In addition, students will research internet sources on the ethical aspects of bullfighting, and exercise their rhetorical and argumentative skills in an in-class debate on the subject. NCSS Standards Met By This Lesson: 9, 11 Introduction: The world of sports, especially collegiate and professional sports, is a major part of North American culture. Likewise, sport is an important part of Border, Mexican, and Latin American culture. We study sports not only for the fun of it, but as a way to better understand the people and the cultures who enjoy sports. There are other options for "Border Sports" other than bullfighting. Mexican futbol (soccer), baseball, and even Mexican wrestling are important sports worthy of study. However, bullfighting is so uniquely part of Mexican culture and also raises heated debate from both pro- and anti-bullfighting factions that it seems the richest choice for a lesson on Border Sports. Bullfights are regularly held in the border cities of Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana, and within the past few years the bloodless, Portuguese-style of bullfighting has become popular in California. Before getting into the "controversy" of bullfighting, this lesson asks that the teacher and all students involved will first do their best to give a fair, impartial consideration of the meaning and significance of the bullfight. That is, before we divide into partisan factions, we must first approach the subject as anthropologists or sociologists, objectively trying to understand the phenomenon.

Public opinion in Barcelona has turned against the ancient sport of bullfighting; there is now talk of a ban on bullfighting by the city council.
Talk of the ban has been ongoing in the parliament of Catalonia, the region of Spain that includes Barcelona, as well.
The parliament has already prohibited children under fourteen from attending bullfights, and several towns in the region have halted bullfights as well.
Opponents of bullfighting say that the slaughter of over 100 bulls each year for public entertainment is incompatible with Barcelona's ambition to become one of the world's leading centers of arts and culture.
Animal welfare groups, including the World Society for the Protection of Animals and the Associacion Defensa Derechos Animal, would like to see the sport banned by the end of this year to avoid tainting the Universal Forum of Culture festival, which Barcelona will be hosting in 2004.

    Where It's At
The Monumental Plaza Mexico is the largest bullfighting ring in the world and holds up to 60,000 people. Primitive bullfighting started around 2000 years before Christ and has evolved into today's more organised, but no less dangerous, bullfights. The success rate of matadors (bull fighters) should turn you off a career in bullfighting because about half of the great matadors in the world were killed in the ring! Fight Club Watching a corrida de toros (bullfight) is not for the faint hearted, but to experience true Mexican culture you cannot beat the drama and pageantry that occurs both in the ring and amongst the spectators in the crowd.
