Mad cow fear hits bullfighting
MADRID, Spain Fear of mad cow disease could soon affect one of Spain's most popular pastimes, bullfighting. The Spanish government said on Monday it is considering a ban on the centuries-old tradition of selling meat from bulls killed by matadors. Under new European Union rules, all cattle over 30 months of age which are slaughtered for human consumption must be tested for mad cow disease. Adult fighting bulls are usually four years old. But Spain lacks the veterinary manpower to carry out tests on all its bulls. An estimated 11,000 are killed each season in about 2,000 fights, many held in small villages scattered around the country. No mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) has been reported in the country's bullfighting industry but seven cases among cows have surfaced since November. Intro Bullfighting Fiestas Flamenco ... White Villages Bullfighting The origins of bullfighting date back hundreds of years to the time when wealthy gentlemen would pit their wits against wild bulls, using only their own horses and a lance. However it was left to Ronda -born Francisco Romero to lend bullfighting its contemporary structure. The sport is fought in the traditional Plaza De Toros (bullring) and aficionados claim that it is more a dramatic form of theatre with style and grace than a barbaric blood-sport.
Mijas Bullring The drama can be broken down into four acts and a prologue, which features the cast of Matadors, three per fight, each of which will attempt to kill two bulls during the course of the corrida (fight). Also in the procession are the mounted Picadors who lance the bull's neck to weaken it, as well as Banderillos whose task it is to stick coloured darts into its back. There are also various assistants to aid with activities such as tending to the horses and disposing of the dead bulls. All this is accompanied by traditional Spanish music which stirs and rallies the crowd for the afternoon's bloody "entertainment". Before the festivities can begin an official, the Alguacil, in costume and cape receives a key thrown down from the president of the fight as a signal to start the first act.

In each faena a bull (toro) is faced by one of three matadors (though on special occasions there may only be one matador present). Matadors (or toreros), the ones who actually kill the bull, are dressed in gold, while their subordinates are in silver or black dress.
Each faena is divided into three sections. In the first section, the bull's strength is tested by the matador and his assistants, who at this point are using large magenta and yellow capes. The bull is then weakened by picadors on horseback who lance the bull in the back of the neck. In addition to weakening the bull, this forces it to drop its head to the level of the bullfighters' capes.
During the second section, the

Welcome News FAACE Campaigns ... Bullfighting A BRIEF HISTORY OF BULLFIGHTING THE ORIGINS Early bullfighting was carried out on horseback, to celebrate notable occasions, Royal weddings, military victories and religious solemnities. When the parliament of 815 met, bulls were killed, according to the Chronicle of Alphonso the Wise. An early instance, of which there is a documentary record, was in celebration of the coronation of Alphonso VII in 1135. The bull killing was held in Varea, Logrono, many famous knights took part. This bull spearing, almost in the form of a tourney or semi hunt, was an aristocratic diversion held infrequently and with no established norms. Over the centuries it transferred from the jousting field to public squares. During the eighteen century, it changed form and became the enjoyment of the common people. It is interesting to note that there are records of bull killings for entertainment in England at an equally early date. THE CHANGE TO BULLFIGHTING ON FOOT Bullfighting on foot came into popular practice in the 18th century. Bands of fighters from the lowest stratas of society killed bulls by wounding them, wherever they could, with swords, daggers, and knives.

ON BULLFIGHTING This book will be about people who risk death for a living. Whatever you or I think of how and why they do this, they are making that commitment every working day- a commitment which I am pointing out I know that I can't equal... But I'll give you as much as I can. I do promise that." Bullfighting- this complicated, repellent, fascinating, grotesque, sacramental, ugly, ritualistic, haphazard, and blasphemous fight. Hemingway, Conrad and Lorca are amongst the many who have written about it, now it's the turn of acclaimed novelist A.L.Kennedy. Unpeeling the layers she looks beyond the theatre, the costume and the well-worn plot and focuses on the fact that a man faces his death while a crowd looks on.And so people are drawn to witness the ultimate spectator sport. In this book A.L.Kennedy explains the mechanics of bullfighting and then dissects them with surgical precision. The result is a startling confrontation with mortality and an extraordinary work of literature. Winner of a Scottish Arts Council Book Award in 2001 US and German ("Steerkampf") editions were published in 2001.

Bullfighting goes back to Crete where youths jumped over bulls and ancient Rome , when many people-versus-animal events were held as a warm-up for gladiatorial sports. The event's earliest roots are probably religious, as many bulls played an important part in the belief systems of many ancient Mediterranean cultures; compare, for instance, the

Bull Fighting Bullfighting is a traditional Latin American spectacle in which bulls bred to fight are tortured by armed men on horseback, then killed by a matador. Starved, beaten, isolated, and drugged before the “fight,” the bull is so debilitated that he cannot defend himself. After being stabbed, speared, and harpooned, the suffering animal is killed.
Bulls are generally calm, peaceful animals who behave violently only when defending themselves or their territory. For this reason, bulls must be expressly bred for bullfighting. More specifically, they are bred to be slow, simple, and predictable, in other words, easy to slaughter. Some bulls are even bred to return to the bullfighter and the torture he inflicts, therein giving the mistaken impression that the animal is fighting a fair fight. Before the “Fight” Heavy weights are tied to the bull’s neck for weeks before the fight to weaken him. Workers rub petroleum into his eyes to obscure his vision and beat the bull’s kidneys repeatedly. They give him tranquilizers, laxatives, and drugs that induce paralysis or a hypnotized state. They feed the bull a great deal of salt so that he will drink excessive amounts of water, become bloated and, consequently, slow. The vast majority of bulls are forced to undergo afeitado, the cutting down or filing of the horns. Part of the bull’s horns are sawed off so that he cannot thrust at his opponent properly. All the while, the bullfighter is practicing his techniques on underweight heifers.
