http://www.geocities.com/americanbroomball/what_is_broomball.htm
Welcome to the ABA B roomball is a sport that is a combination of ice hockey and indoor soccer. The game is played on a ice rink with 5 players plus a goalie on each team trying to score against the other team. The players run on the ice instead of skating while using a "broom" to control the ball and score. Players wear pads, gloves, and helmets. During the 1890’s, the sport of broomball originated in Montreal, Canada, where streetcar employees played on frozen surfaces during lunch breaks, using brooms to strike a ball in an attempt to score in the opponent’s goal, much like hockey in concept. As early as 1910, broomball had spread to other parts of Canada, where it was often played at winter carnivals. It basically remained an informal recreational activity until 1966, when the first state tournament was held. Since then, the popularity of the sport and the level of competition have grown significantly. Broomball is often played on frozen lakes and any other ice surfaces that players can find, but it is officially played on a hockey rink. Though it’s a unique sport, skills acquired in more traditional sports such as hockey and soccer translate to broomball fairly easily. Broomball rules and strategies are most closely related to hockey, but the unique equipment makes the sport very different. Beginners often just wear tennis shoes, but experienced players typically wear specially made broomball shoes, which have a rubbery sponge bottom that provides more traction on the ice.

Teams Tournaments Find a League Play Broomball ... Links Broomball Rules The Game Broomball is played with an inflated ball with six players on the ice for each team. Time A broomball game consists of two periods. Usually, the periods consist of two 18 minute, stop time periods, with a two minute break between periods. Off-sides Off-side is called when a player from the team in possesion of the ball enters the offensive zone before the ball. USA rules mark the blue line as "in" and the red line as "out." International rules typically use the center red line as "in" and "out." High Stick Typically a high stick is anything above the shoulder. Some leagues and tournaments mark it above the waist. Icing Icing occurs when the defending team clears the ball from inside their zone and across the opposing team's goal line. Play is stopped when a member of the opposing team touches the ball. If the opposing team is on a power play, icing is not called. Also, if the goalie of the opposing team or a member of the defending team touches the ball after it has crossed the goal line, icing is not called. The Rink The rink should be as close as possible to 200 feet long and 85 feet wide. Corners are rounded in the arc of a radius of 20 feet. The net is 6 feet high and 8 feet wide in USA play. Internationally, smaller, hockey-sized nets are used.

    1995 Canadian National Broomball Championship
The 1995 Women's Broomball Championship was held in Barrie, Ontario during the week of April 5 - 9. Despite the weather conditions (much snow), teams from every province and territory were represented with the exception of PEI and the Yukon. Provinces were placed into two divisions, according to last year's standings, for Round robin play. There were six teams in each division, and after the round robin, the Top two teams in the two divisions moved on to the "A" Pool for Playoffs, and the next two (3rd and 4th), in the two divisions entered the "B" Pool Playoffs. The remaining teams were eliminated from the competition (Edmonton Angels, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and NWT). I'll add here that the goalie from NWT, was named top goalie of the National Championship! Here are the results of the 1995 Women's Broomball Championships: A Pool: 1. Québec (Entremi) (Gold Medal, A Pool) 2. Ontario Champ (Barrie Satellites) (Silver Medal, A Pool) 3. Manitoba (The Storm) (Bronze Medal, A Pool) 4. Ontario Host (Parr Line) (4th, A Pool) B Pool: 5. Saskatchewan (Gold, B Pool) 6. Alberta (Last year Host) (Silver, B Pool) 7. Newfoundland (Bronze, B Pool) 8. British Columbia (4th, B Pool) Not making the playoffs: Alberta (Last year's champs!) Nova Scotia New Brunswick Northwest Territories Thanks to Patricia Walsh (pwalsh@Direct.CA), who competed for British Columbia in the national championship, for providing this information.

The sport of broomball originated in Canada in the early 1900's. Since then, that crude form of the sport has grown into a popular sport on all levels. Men's women's and coed teams participate both competitively and recreationally.
Many of us have been exposed to broomball in an entertainment sense where, local media celebrities combat against one another on an ice rink where they play with house brooms and a recreation ball. However, when people witness the silly antics of their nightly news person slipping to the seat of his pants, few of them realize that what they are seeing is the crude form of an actual sport which is sweeping the country.
Broomball is played on an ice hockey rink with rules and strategies similar to those of hockey. Players wear padded sponge-rubber shoes, to enhance traction on the slippery surface, and strike a ball the size of a small soccer ball with specially designed brooms made of corn-straw dipped in rubber or solid molded rubber, trying to score into a net which is guarded by a goal-tender.
    In Your Area
Ice arena managers across the country have discovered the benefits of adding a broomball program to fill vacant ice time. Arenas in shopping malls and close to college campuses have been especially successful in setting up recreational programs in consistently empty time slots, and find them expanding into popular attractions. This strategey is not exclusive to northern climates. In fact, some of the best young broomball programs exist in areas of California, North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, and even Florida.
