BOWHUNTING
-Dave Canfield Publisher, Bowhunter Bowhunting Small Game Hunting Whitetail Techniques Bowhunting. There's nothing like it. Seasons of numbing cold, blazing heat, throbbing muscles, endless hikes and countless frustrations all become worthwhile in one glorious heart-stopping second.
A magnificent animal is so close that a single breath or blink of an eye will spook it. It appears-as if by magic-in a spot you've watched for hours. Or it approaches from a distance, giving you time to make ready. It doesn't matter-the thrill's the same, and at this moment it all comes together. It's time for the shot.
In bowhunting, "the shot" actually is the culmination of much more than meets the eye. A bowhunter donning a backpack and vanishing into nature's shadows seems to step into a much less complicated past. We who love the sport cherish its simplicity, but as with any difficult task well done, that "simplicity" only becomes reality after the planning, preparation and practice. In fact, I believe a more accurate description of the bowhunter's relationship with nature would be "pure." If the bowhunter is ready, no experience equals a day in the field. And in this sport, getting there is more than half the fun.
I once was asked where one could learn bowhunting in a weekend seminar. I replied that it's impossible to do so. Properly done, it's a lifetime learning experience. Hunting skills require years of honing and are best developed from an early age. Actual use of archery equipment takes regular training and practice for novice and expert alike. Few beginners can shoot more than 10 or 15 arrows in a session - if they want to be able to move tomorrow. On the other hand, in a good hands-on seminar a person can learn about equipment and how it should be used. As with skiing, golf, fly fishing, swimming and some other sports, a little instruction up front prevents a lifetime of bad habits that come from "winging it."

    Hunting Season
As I sit here making this page I can think of nothing other than hunting season being just around the corner and thoughts of past hunts are running through mind. I can vividly remember the exact tree the deer came around and where he stopped and offered the perfect shot. I can remember the release of the string from my bow and remember watching the arrow as it flew harmlessly over his back. This would have been a disaster for some and just another miss for others but for me it was a memory to dream of until next year when even more memories will be made..
    Past hunts
Click on a thumbnail in the left column to view a large image. Here are a few of my deer from last year and as you can see I can feed my family but some have a little more meat than others!

As the season starts and new pictures are taken I will update the pictures on this page.

Njiri Exclusive Bow Hunting Safaris welcomes all Bowhunters to South Africa
Njiri Bow Lodge (an African tribal name for Warthog) was established in October 2000 and is situated on the Limpopo river in the Limpopo Province, North West of Johannesburg. The Ranch is 6,160 acres (2,800 ha) and has 6 miles (9,5 km) of river frontage and is situated in a Malaria free area in one of the richest game areas in Africa.
The bush comprises of mixed thornveld, turf veld and riverine bush. All are recognised as being able to carry the highest quantity of both browsers (leaf eaters) and grasers (grass eaters), that any ecosystem can support.
This area was the hunting ground of great hunters such as William Finaughty and Frederich Courtney Selous during the 1850's - 1900's, when vast herds of Buffalo, Elephant, Lion etc roamed free in our area and Bechuanaland which is now now Botswana. The Limpopo river forms the border between Botswana and South Africa . Continue

bowhunting ACCURACY. Silencing Your Bow. Speed versus noise has been one ofthe many heated topics in the bowhunting world over the past few years.

    BOWHUNTING ACCURACY
    Silencing Your Bow
    by Jason R. Snavely
Contrary to the belief of most archery hunters, speed will not compensate for a loud bow. Modern bowhunters are rapidly jumping on the band wagon and buying bows that are fast. Unfortunately, these bowhunters are overlooking the noise factor. Speed versus noise has been one of the many heated topics in the bowhunting world over the past few years. I am hear to tell you, regardless of bow speed, Big Game animals will always hear the twang of a bow before an arrow penetrates the "boiler room". Contrary to popular belief, it is virtually impossible to shoot an arrow from a bow fast enough to beat the acute hearing of an animal such as the whitetail deer. Most modern bowhunters fail to educate themselves, therfore they are unaware of the keen hearing and amazingly quick reflexes of Big Game. An average whitetail buck has a vital kill zone of eight inches. Therefore the deer needs to move only four inches to put a damper on a successful hunt. An alarmed whitetail is capable of moving more than four inches at the twang of a bowstring. In fact, through slow-motion video tape, it has been proven that an alert buck is capable of moving 12 to 24 inches to escape an arrow.

st International Bowhunting Symposium July 19-20, 2002, Budapest , Hungary
    July 23, 2002
On 19-20 July 2002 in Budapest, Hungary, the Working Group Bowhunting of the CIC International Game and Wildlife Conservation held its first international symposium to discuss bowhunting from different perspectives. The conference took place in the Hungarian Museum of Agriculture with delegates from a number of bowhunting associations e.g. German Bowhunters’ Association, German Traditional Bowhunters’ Organization, Austrian Bowhunter Federation, Finnish Bowhunters’ Association and Hungarian Bowhunting and Field Archery Association. On the first day, the lecturers elaborated on the past, the present and the future of bowhunting, its practice and legislation in various countries, education on a national and international level, possibilities for the legalization of bowhunting in countries where it has not been accepted, such as the spokesperson from Slovenia described the situation in his country, and the opinion of hunters and non-hunters. Two major documents were produced and approved by the contributors: the CIC Guidelines for the Practice of Bowhunting , drawing the attention to those principles and ethics that are to be respected by all bowhunters; the other being a more specific
