Cross Country Skiing Snowshoeing Bobsled Luge ... Mountain Biking T he Verizon Sports Complex is home to the newest combined track in the world for bobsled, luge and skeleton racing. It also retains the 1932 / 1980 track for public bobsled rides in summer and winter. Located at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, the site also provides 50 kilometers (31 miles) of groomed cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Biathlon shooting and mountain biking, on 30 kilometers of trails, round out the menu. Each Thursday between July 8 and August 26 take part in our public race series. All sleds will be electronically timed and the riders in the fastest sled for each session (10a-12:30p, 1:30p-4p, and 5p-7p) will win a special prize, PLUS be entered into the grand prize drawing for a weekend trip to Lake Placid this winter. Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project Do you know how Geoffrey became a driving force in the success of the U.S. Bobsled Team, starting with his innovative vision ten years ago? Geoffrey was watching the 1992 Winter Olympics on television and was saddened by the U.S. Bobsled Team's poor showing. He learned that the sleds were all made outside of the U.S. and asked why they were not built here. They did terribly, they crashed, but they were a media sensation, a merchandising wet-dream (I had a Jamaican Bobsled Team sweater myself) and eventually the subject of the Disney Film "Cool Runnings". Where are they now? The last members of the original team retired by 1999, and original team member Chris Stokes was elected president of the Jamaica Bobsled Federation. Jamaica has a thriving bobsled scene to this day, now fielding teams in both the men's and women's competitions. In 1992 the two man teams placed 34th and 35th and the four man team placed 24th. In Lillehammer in 1994 they stunned the world when the four man team placed 14th, beating the US, the Russians, the French and one of the Italian teams. The Holy Grail in Jamaican bobsledding, an olympic medal, has yet to be attained. The Bobsled Steiner Section of the B.S.T. Did you watch the Salt Lake 2002 Winter Games , and wonder what it would be like to ride the bobsled? Here's your chance to do it mountain bike style! The Bobsled is a fast, challenging, one way drop off of the B.S.T.!! I've given the Bobsled a lower rating for scenery, this is because you won't have time to take in the scenery beyond your front tire! This ride starts with a good strong climb up Terrace Hills Drive, then continues on up the B.S.T. to the City Creek Canyon saddle. From here it drops down the pipeline and is pretty loose and torn up. After the first 1/4 more or so, it turns into the high banked, swooping ride that it's named for! How to get there: Park at the corner of Terrace Hills Drive and 11th Ave. Head straight up Terrace Hills Drive until you reach a cul-de-sac, the trail begins on the right.
