SA's national blind team takes on St Martin's School in preparation for the inaugural Blind Cricket World Cup, writes PHAKAMA MBONAMBI
THE idea of a blind cricket team playing a sighted side may imply an unfair, if not unthinkable, contest. But this is what happened on Friday when the national blind cricket team played St Martin's School in Rosettenville as part of its preparations for the first-ever Blind Cricket World Cup in New Delhi, India, in November. Formed in March, the national team comprises members from the blind teams of KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape and Gauteng. After practising hard for a week, the national side wanted to test its muscle by playing a one-day limited-overs match against St Martin's. Far from being a one-sided affair, the national team proved their worth, despite their handicap. Playing in hot conditions, St Martin's batted first and racked up 265 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 30 overs. The blind team responded with 171 runs for the loss of six wickets. Each team must have four B1 players

Different for the spirit and the human endeavour behind it. Here there are no qualms about playing against Pakistan. This is about the second World Cup for the Blind, which Chennai will be hosting from December 3 to 14, when the final encounter will be played out at the prestigious M A Chidambaram Stadium. Bangalore is the other venue where some matches will be played. Ram Karan Sharma, captain of the Indian team, is all confident that this time they would win the cup, which went to South Africa when the inaugural event was held in Delhi in 1998. This year's cup was to be originally hosted by New Zealand but the Kiwis cried off at the last minute citing lack of financial support. The second edition is being supported by oil majors Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL). Hence, it has been named Petro Cup.

Tangalle meets President's XI in Blind cricket final
by A. C. DE SILVA It's a 'Big Match' with a difference - the clash between Tangalle and the President's XI in the final of the National Cricket Association of the Blind next Saturday (Sept 22) at the MCA grounds, McCarthy Road. This is the first tournament of the National Cricket Association of the Blind, but earlier the Blind cricketers had a tourney conducted by another organisation and Tangalle won that tourney in 1999 beating Ratmalana School for the Deaf and Blind. This tourney becomes important in the fact that after the final, a pool of players will be selected in preparation for the Second World Cup for the Blind to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand in January 2002. Cricket among the blind is played basically like the normal game, but there are variations, like the use of ball, wickets and rules pertaining to the conduct of the game. In a match, there should be five totally blind players and six partially blind players and the ball used is made of plastic with a bell inserted inside to make some indication to the blind cricketers in which direction it is coming.

s many as 150 neurosurgeons attending the second Indo-Japanese neurosurgery conference at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here are looking forward to a lecture on surgical robotics by Professor Hongo Kozuhiro from Shinshu University in Japan. The lecture is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat inaugurated the conference here on Friday. According to Dr S. S. Kale, organising secretary of the conference and Senior Neuro Surgeon at AIIMS, the Indo-Japanese collaboration in neurosurgery began from a similar conference in Nagoya in Japan last March and is a great learning experience for Indian neurosurgeons. “Twenty-two neurosurgeons from Japan are attending the conference. The delegation is led by Professor J. Yoshida from Nagoya University, Japan. There are some Japanese neurosurgeons who have achieved tremendous success in treating certain neurosurgical disorders like vascular neurosurgery, skull-based tumours and ancurysms. Indian neurousrgeons have been going to Japan for training. The neurosurgeons from Japan will share with their Indian counterparts the most advanced techniques ranging from gene therapy for malignant glioma to surgical robotics in neuro surgery,” he said.

Next Article Contents Sussex student and England sporting star Andy Dalby-Welsh has returned from a visit to the cricket-mad West Indies, where he has been helping to develop blind cricket. Andy was picked to travel to Barbados after his performance in this year's Blind Cricket World Cup in India, where he was part of the England squad that came third overall in the championships and beat the eventual winners, Pakistan. During the Barbados trip, Andy and the rest of the squad trained the newly formed local blind team. Their visit caused such a media stir that over 1,500 spectators turned up to see an England vs. Barbados clash at the end of the tour. "We did rather beat the Barbados team," recalls Andy, "but they've only been in existence for eight months. Next time they'll be much tougher opponents." The 10-day tour also included a match against a team of sighted players including '80s West Indies cricket legend Desmond Haines. "We lost!" laughs Andy. "As they could see us setting up the shots, they knew exactly where to run. But we managed to get 90 runs against 150, so it wasn't a complete wipe-out." Luckily for Andy, the group had lots of spare time to look around the Caribbean island. "Barbados is beautiful, and we did all go to the beach - but we also went to various schools and got everyone playing cricket."

CRICKET/NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FOR BLIND
They need every form of encouragement
S. DINAKAR THEY were visually challenged, but opened the eyes of the normally sighted. Their spirit soared as high as the clouds in the sky. S. MAHINSHA
The jubilant Karnataka team with the trophy. The HSBC National cricket championship for the blind in Chennai revealed the strength of mind of these boys, who have had to surmount daunting hurdles before realising their passion - playing cricket. At the end of four stirring days (February 11 to 14), Karnataka overcame holder Delhi by three wickets to regain the title after seven years, yet every single boy who competed was a winner. Cricket for the blind is played with a modified set of rules. The bowling is underarm, the ball has to pitch before the middle of the wicket, the metal stumps are bound together as a single unit. And the plastic ball is filled with metal bearings so that the sound can be picked up by the batsman and the fielders. The audio signals between the batsman and the bowler are also very important here. The sense of sound of these cricketers was astonishing; they invariably managed to connect the ball, and often threw themselves on the field to effect sensational stops.
