Aerodynamics and Bicycling page 1
Introduction

The bicycle has been around for over 100 years. One of the first bicycles was the ordinary or high wheeler bicycle. This bike had a large front wheel and an extremely small rear wheel. The speed with which one could travel on this bicycle depended on the size of the front wheel. The larger the wheel, the faster the bike. This design was limited to tall riders and this bicycle was short lived. By 1880, the modern bicycle appeared and was known as the safety bicycle.
In the early 1930's a strange new bicycle design appeared out of France. The rider of this bicycle sits in a low easy-chair position. This translates to a much smaller frontal area and, therefore, less drag. This bicycle was so efficient that an unknown rider was able to defeat the best riders of the day as well as break most existing records. This lead to a furious debate about whether the velocar was a bicycle or not. In 1934, the UCI (Union Cycliste International) passed a series of rules against the use of recumbent bicycles.
The velocar proved that aerodynamic drag plays an important role in cycling. In fact, at 8 mph (3.5 m/s) the aerodynamic drag of a bicycle and rider is greater than the rolling resistance. When the speed increases to 20 mph (11m/s), the aerodynamic drag is more than 80% of the total drag. So, how does one improve upon the aerodynamics of a standard bicycle? By looking at a bicycle and rider, there are several areas for aerodynamic improvement. The most important area is with the rider position. Aerodynamic improvements can also be made for the frame, wheels, and individual components.

On Wednesday, May 19, bicyclists across Texas and the U.S. gathered in their communities to participate in local Rides of Silence . In Dallas, an estimated 2,500 bicyclists met at White Rock Lake for a 10-mile loop, during which bicyclists pedaled no faster than 12 MPH. I am an American bicyclist whose focus, since 1979, has been racing. I have a United States Cycling Federation (USCF) racing license and have been a USCF official since 1984 (Category 2 official since 1985). In the fall of 1996 I moved to France and in February, 1997 joined a French cyclotouring club. Except for some individual training and some rides at the velodrome, all my riding is with the club. The club rides every Sunday morning, meets two evenings per month, and has an occasional social event. I am the only anglophone, so all conversations are in French. There are many sources of information for anglophones who want to take a cycling vacation in France, so I do not repeat that information here, though I include some links (see More Cycling Information). My pages provide information about French cycling organizations, the types of rides available through these organizations, and my cycling experiences as a member of a French club. Long Island Non-Motorized Transportation Study
The Long Island Non-Motorized Transportation Study (LINMTS), sponsored by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) and the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, is working to address bicycle and pedestrian issues throughout Long Island . The study will identify improvements to make bicycling, walking, and other non-motorized transportation modes more attractive and convenient. In order to ensure that improvements reflect the needs of all Long Islanders, a survey has been developed that will allow you to offer your input as the study progresses. If you would like to take the survey, or learn more about LINMTS, please visit walkbikeLI.com for more information.

Bridge Access
Thanks to three decades of unrelenting T.A. advocacy, the bicycle paths on the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg and Queensboro Bridges have been open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day since the Spring of 2001the first time in 50 years all the paths were open! To achieve this feat, four generations of T.A. members sent tens of thousands of letters and postcards and staged more than a hundred rallies and attended untold public meetings.
