Bicycling in Yellowstone
Bicycles are not available for rent at the park. If you plan to bring one, remember it is subject to the same traffic rules as automobiles. Bicycling is permitted on established public roads, parking areas, and designated routes. Bikes are prohibited on backcountry trails and boardwalks. Use extreme caution when riding on park roads; roads are winding and narrow while shoulders are either narrow or nonexistent. Vehicle traffic is heavy most of the time. There are no bicycle paths along roadways. We strongly recommend that safety gear, including helmet and high visibility clothing, be worn by all bicyclists. During April, May, and June, high snowbanks make travel more dangerous. Road elevations range from 5,300 to 8,860 feet (1615 to 2700 meters), and services and facilities are relatively far aparttypically 20 to 30 miles (37 to 56 kilometers). Motorists frequently do not see bicyclists or fail to give them sufficient space on the road. Drivers sometimes pass on hill crests, blind curves, or in oncoming traffic. Vehicles, especially motor homes or those towing trailers, may have wide mirrors, posing an additional hazard. For more information about bicycling, stop at a visitor center.

Bicycling Guide
Welcome to Bicycling Heaven! Our natually flat landscape helps make Virginia Beach a great place to bike for every level of cyclist. Our three miles of boardwalk feature a separate bike trail that parallels the ocean. Some folks find themselves spending the whole day leisurely retracing this beautiful path. For those who are looking to cover some ground, there is the Seashore State Park trail system. Easily reached by trail from the boardwalk, there are miles of paved and dirt trails that wind through the wetlands and along Broad Bay. All trails are clearly marked. The park closes at dusk.

Bicycling Safety
These web pages are about how to ride a bicycle safely in traffic. There are three parallel discussions, two of which are for cyclists, differing in the level of detail, and one of which is for drivers. The section for drivers is designed to help drivers understand what they should expect cyclists to do in various circumstances. Cross links between corresponding sections exist, so that readers can switch both viewpoints and the level of detail as desired. The links on the top heading in the following table will take you to the full table of contents for a particular view (a partial table of contents is provided here). Helmets and Safety

The target audience includes anyone considering using a bicycle for commuting or other activities that require riding a bicycle in possibly heavy traffic. It is also useful as background material for parents who want to teach their children how to ride a bicycle safely.
Navigation
Except for the current page, all pages start and end with a table of links All the pages have a bicycle logo at the top left corner, except that this page may have a log preceding the bicycle logo with a link to a home page on the current web site. Clicking on the bicycle logo will visit this page. If the bicycle logo on this page is clicked, the current page will fill the whole browser window: if some web site arranges to display this page inside an HTML frame, clicking the bicycle logo will let you see this page, and all pages it has links to, without frames.

Recumbents
I own and ride a recumbent bicycle . It was built by Brian DeFelice of the Defelice Recumbent Bicycle Company in New Palestine, Indiana. I have owned and ridden it for 10 years. I rode the recumbent over the entire Natchez Trace Parkway in October, 1996 on a self-contained tour.
Self-Contained Touring
My real love is self-contained touring. I have toured since 1974. I carried all my gear on my back on my first tour. I didn't know any better. If I could earn a living touring, I'd do it in a minute. Below is a list of some of my more memorable tours: Central Florida (1974) - My first tour
Southwest Indiana
Southeast Indiana
Coastal Maine
Following the Wabash River across northern Indiana
Bar Harbor to Lake Placid
Seattle to Eugene, Oregon
Indianapolis to Auburn, Indiana
Central Holland
Natchez Trace
Anchorage to Fairbanks, Alaska
Commuting
For many years, I bicycle commuted during the spring, summer and fall. In Indianapolis, I was able to commute for six (6) to seven (7) months out of the year. For the four (4) years I spent in Rochester, New York, I was able to commute from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the rest of the time the weather was uncooperative. I went for 63 days without driving my truck in 1987. I haven't commuted since moving to southwest Michigan three (3) years ago. That will change this summer.
Frames
My touring bike is a custom built frame. I have a design for a new frame that I wish to build (have built). It looks like I will be building my new frame this winter. Doug Fattic, a frame builder in Niles, Michigan, will be teaching a frame building class this winter. I will be building my new bicycle in this class!
