Bicycling on Cape Cod Even though our focus is on walking, users have asked us for information about
bicycling on Cape Cod. Usually, these folks are from off-Cape, and thus do not have
access to the printed material available in local bookstores. Many of us who walk
regularly are also bike riders, so we can be of some help. Consider this as a work in
progress, however. First, we will show scanned maps of some of the paved bicycle trails. Then we will add,
one at a time, descriptions of road routes that we know and like. Only experienced bicyclists
should ride the roads of Cape Cod. Family groups in particular should only ride on paved
trails. Everyone should wear a helmet. You only need it once!

In this collection of bicycle clipart all the graphics were made and/or used by other internet cyclists like myself. I just collected it from the hundreds of cycling pages that exist in cyberspace. I failed to mention the author, not only because in most cases the page owner probably wasn't the maker of the graphics, but also I do not want to disturb your pleasure while viewing all this wonderful bicycle graphics. If anybody is offended because I used his or her product withour prior consultation, I deeply regret it and will remove the graphic immediately after being notified. Some Early Memories of Pearland
    by Lester Hood Dear Chris,
I enjoyed your web page about your father and want to share with you some childhood memories. Since I was also born in Pearland in 1923, we shared many of the same experiences while growing up in a small town. My family lived in Friendswood during my elementary years, so that first recollection of knowing Le Roy was in Faye Brookshire's fifth grade class. He made a lasting impression on his classmates with his entertainment skills. He was not shy about about standing in front of the room and singing interminable verses of the song, "There's a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea." Mr. Dempsy taught us in the sixth grade. That was the year we began playing softball. Our team won the county meet by defeating Alvin in a game played in Pearland. Prior to that, we had won three games in one day in Freeport. While in Mrs. Brigham's seventh grade class, we continued to play softball. It was in 1937 that Pearland acquired its first affiliated high school. A new building was constructed, and high school students began attending classes there rather than in Webster. The original school was converted into a gym-auditorium with a raised roof.

Cycling on Long Island is a sport done year round. If you are new to the area, stick to the defined bike trails, because traffic can get busy on the main roads, and some neighborhoods don't encourage biking. There are several bicycle clubs on Long Island. They welcome new members as well as visitors. Some of these clubs and additional Long Island cycling sites are: Each club has monthly newsletters which include ride schedules. There is also an "Umbrella" organization called The Paumanok bicycle club. The clubs also sponsor at least one major charity/promotional ride during the year. For the casual rider, here are some spots to check out:

  • Eisenhower Park - 2 miles of interwoven paths

Bicycling came later in our outdoor activities. Trailwalker had been using her Huffy to ride around town for some time. Then Broken Claw bought himself an 18-speed Mongoose Switchback trail bike. Trailwalker soon upgraded her wheels to a Specialized model, and we were off and running (or, riding, I should say). We still ride around town, to the park or to the pizza shop for lunch, but the speed of bicycling, over walking, adds a new dimension to recreational trails. Achilles Tendons
The Achilles tendons are the tendons at the back of the ankle, connecting the calf muscle to the heel. If you have pain in these tendons, it usually indicates a problem in pedaling technique. Achilles tendon problems often result from " ankling " during the pedal stroke. This is occasionally related to having the saddle set too high, forcing the cyclist to point the toes excessively to reach the bottom of the pedal swing. Having your cleats set too far forward, or otherwise pedaling with the toes. The farther forward the contact between the foot and the pedal, the greater the stress on the Achilles tendons.
Ankles
Ankle pain while cycling is often the result of " ankling " while pedaling. It may also result from being flat-footed, in which case orthotic shoe inserts are a likely remedy. Another possible cause of ankle pain is a bent pedal or crank, causing the foot to wobble back and forth as the pedals turn.
Back
Back pain while cycling is usually caused by poor cycling posture . Good cycling posture is very different from good posture while sitting or standing. A posture that is comfortable for sitting still will not necessarily be comfortable while actually riding a bicycle. Correct cycling posture must facilitate the pedaling action, and also must enable the rider to cope with the jolts that result from road irregularities.

This article is also available in Italian Da Mayor never knew what hit him. Not known as one to understate anything, San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr., surely did so at his July 15, 1997, press availability. "Critical Mass has reached critical mass," declared the Mayor, who had earlier in the month promised to impose law and order on the monthly bicycle happening, likening its participants to a group of lawless Hell's Angels. Following Mayor Brown's initial tirade, the local media played up the impending confrontation, filling the airwaves and newstands with speculation about the "crackdown." All the town was abuzz about da Mayor versus da bikers. However, it soon became apparent that the Mayor, generally viewed as an unflappable master politician, was on the verge of coming unhinged. Had Brown perhaps underestimated his opponent? What the Mayor didn't know then, but surely knows now, was this. In going up against Critical Mass, Mayor Brown was confronting the leading edge of a growing global movement intent on dramatically changing the urban environment. Call it the "Sustainable Cities" or "Alternative Transportation" movement.
A global challenge Many debate whether Critical Mass, with its prominent slogan "One Less Car", is a cause, a result or merely a

Bicycling Through East Carmel Valley
When the eastern part of the Carmel Valley Creek Bike Path was opened to the public, the eastern part of the Highway 56 freeway was closed to bicyclists. Recent construction on Highway 56 has disrupted bicycle travel in this area even more. Alternate routes are available, but signage is poor and they may be hard to follow. Some of the roads are so new that they aren't in the 2004 Thomas Guide and some aren't even signed. There are two alternate routes. The official route is poorly signed. The unofficial route is completely unsigned. Ironically, the unofficial route is probably closer to the final location of the planned bike path. Westbound bicyclists who don't know the way will probably find this route simply by following their noses.
Eastbound Bicyclists The Official Route
Follow the path under Carmel Country Road and across the creek on a small causeway. On the other side of the creek, turn left and ride up a steep path to the east side of Carmel Country Road. If the causeway is flooded, you can cross Carmel Country Road at a pedestrian crosswalk just south of the ramps to and from eastbound Highway 56.
