Welcome to the Bicycle Polo Association of America
What do you get when you combine the low-impact aerobic workout of cycling, the challenge of a racket sport, and the camaraderie of a team sport? Bicycle Polo!
Polo is thought to be the oldest team sport known to man, dating from the days when Persian warriors first rode horses into battle. Bicycle polo evolved a bit later, having had to wait for some clever chap to invent the modern bicycle. Polo has long been known as "the king of games," but the money and skills required have greatly limited its popularity. Bicycle polo has a much broader appeal, since almost anyone can ride a bike, not to mention afford one. Anyone, male or female, aged nine to ninety, can play bicycle polo!
A Unique Combination: Cycling, Racket Sport, and Team Sport
Bicycle polo combines three key elements: cycling, racket sports, and team play. Most active people currently enjoy at least one of those by itself (e.g. mountain biking, tennis, or basketball); imagine how much fun it is to unite all three!

A Synopsis) The Origin and Object of the Game The game of Bike Polo, if you haven't already figured out, is a variation of the equestrian game with a bicycle being substituted for the polo pony. Although not as glamorous as the equine variety, Bike Polo offers as much challenge and fun without the prohibitive price tag. The game's birthplace is believed to be India where, about a hundred years ago, British troops used bicycles to hone their equestrian polo skills. Like horse polo, the bicycle version is contested by two teams. The simple objective for each team is to score a greater number of goals than its opponent within a specified amount of time. Equipment All that is needed to play is a bike, an approved cycling helmet, a Bike Polo mallet, and a Bike Polo ball. For those who already own a bike and helmet, the investment is around $50. The Field A grassy area 100 x 60 yards constitutes the USBPA official field, but you can play on almost any size or surface depending on availability. Just remember, falls do happen and grass is softer than asphalt or dirt. Teams Each team can have only four riders participating at a time. The teams can be all male, all female or coed.

Bicycle Polo quickly spread to England, and the continent., and 1897, the first club was started in the United States. In 1908 it was included in the Olympic Games held in Shepherds Bush, London. The sport all but died out during the First World War, but enjoyed a rebirth during the 30s. It remains a popular sport in some areas. For example, there are over 10,000 members in the Cycle Polo Federation of India. This doesn't include the many thousands who play the sport informally. Perhaps this popularity is driven by the ready availability of bicycles û which also happen to be the most common mode of transportation in the country. Rhagavendra Dundlod, the Secretary of the Cycle Polo Federation of India, and son of the Raja of Dundlod, tells how the previous Maharaja of Jaipur always kept bicycles stored at his polo field so he could enjoy a regular game of bicycle polo with his friends. The sport remains popular among many equestrian polo players in India both as a means of conditioning and in order to practice team strategy. Indeed, bicycle polo is a compulsory part of the training regimen for members of the Indian Army Polo Team.

Gowerton Bicycle Polo Club
Gowerton Bicycle Polo Club
Gowerton Bicycle Polo Club began in the late 1950's. It was started by a local shopkeeper Albert (Bert) Oakley Brighton, who came originally from Tooting, in London, but had been brought to South Wales by his job in the National Fire Brigade. He had played the game in the 1930's and felt that the youth of his now adopted village would also enjoy playing the game. He and his teenage son Richard went to the local scrap-yard and salvaged old bicycles and from all the parts they built two bikes that were close to the requirements of a proper polo bike -straight front forks, low fixed-wheel gear and no brakes. Bert then approached some of his old associates in London and begged for a couple of mallets and balls.
Bert Brighton fixing bikes (above) at 7 Sterry Road, Gowerton, and later number 94. His friends, also keen to spread the game, sent him a bundle of used mallets and balls. Equipped with these, one morning Bert and his son went to Gowerton Mart Field, in Gorwydd Road, and just began to ride around knocking a ball about. Their strange antics soon attracted a group of young locals who after a while asked the inevitable question "What you doing Mister?" followed shortly after by "Can I have a go?''

Mount Washington Bicycle Polo Association LOOKING TO STOP SLOTS? CLICK www.21209.org Welcome to the MWBPA Online We are an extremely loosely affiliated group of Bicycle Polo enthusiasts based in the Baltimore neighborhood of Mount Washington. We play nearly every Sunday at 4 PM at the Wellwood International School in Pikesville. All are welcome. Bike Polo combines bicycling skills with racquet sport games. The game is about control, strategy, and speed. Once you have experienced bike polo, you will want to come out again and again. We have doubled in size in the past few months, and our goal is to have at least four teams playing in tournament style. Here is our deal:
  • We play every Sunday at 4:00 PM on the Soccer field at Wellwood International School at 2901 Smith Avenue in Pikesville, MD. Click HERE for a map. We enthusiastically welcome new players and spectators. Everyone is welcome to play or watch. However, everyone is responsible for his or her own safety. Bicycle Polo can be dangerous and all players must accept this reality. It is important to arrive on time for play. If you are new, you may want to arrive a bit early to get your gear in order and to get familiar with the basics of the game.
