Stotz Scholarship Recipients Honored by Little League

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (May 25, 2004) – In creating much more than merely a game of bats and balls, Carl Stotz sought to construct a program that had good citizenship at its core when he founded Little League Baseball in 1939.
That goal continues to be the driving force behind Little League today. Accordingly, the Little League Baseball International Board of Directors established the Carl E. Stotz Little League Baseball Scholarship Aid Fund to reward academic excellence. More...

Collecting Baseball Memorabilia A Great American Pastime
For most, it's the love of the game and the passion of collecting things which mean something to us that makes baseball memorabilia the multi-million dollar business every year. Fans and collectors alike have been traveling to Cooperstown, New York to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame since its inception in 1939. The town, nestled in the farmlands of mid New York State, has grown with the influx of fans. Each year, in July, some 40,000 fans converge upon Cooperstown for the annual induction of new 'Hall of Famers.' The display of the Evolution of Catchers' Equipment in the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum draws a lot of attention. If these items were in Mint Condition, their values would be astronomical. Even someone who's not an avid fan of the sport could get caught in the excitement caused by the fans. Walking among the other people on the streets filled with 'baseball stores,' that feeling of Mom, Apple Pie and the American Flag is overwhelming. The Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum are the epitome to the sport. Everything from past World Series rings to game worn jerseys, cleats, and equipment don the walls of this prestigious sanctum of the sport.

- Tips from the Pros - Cal Ripken, Sr: The Ideal Hitter
The ideal hitter would probably have a combination of these qualities: strength, determination, coordination, confidence, vision, rhythm, style, body control, quick hands, and the will to learn and to take advice. The following is a list of batting tips that can help anyone become a better hitter.
  • Select a bat you can handle. Learn the strike zone - don't swing at bad pitches. Keep your front shoulder and chin tucked in, and your hands back. Turn your head so that both eyes are on the pitcher - don't look around your nose. Stay on the balls of your feet - keep off your heels. Keep your head still. In order to get the bat started, move your hands back slightly as the pitcher is getting ready to release the ball. If you like the pitch, go ahead and hit it. If you don't like the pitch, then hold up your swing. Take a short step and stride - a long stride will only throw you off balance. Stay on top of the ball. A slight downward swing allows this and is a good way to keep from upper-cutting. Keeping the front shoulder in and down also allows a hitter to get the bat head out in front and prevents dropping the back shoulder.
