121. Skiing Equipment For Off-Piste Skiing And Ski Touring
true that the lighter backcountry skis don t offer sufficient downhill performance it is possible to use the same setup for both off and on-piste skiing.

Ski Equipment
If the off-piste skier is largely covering lift served terrain with short (less than 30 minutes) walks then their existing alpine ski gear will be sufficient. However once you start going further a field, involving climbs up to 3 hours over sometimes glaciated terrain the safety and comfort of a touring rig will be appreciated. At one time serious off-piste skiers such as the legendary Jean Marc-Bonvin wouldn't have dreamt of trading the performance of their alpine skis and boots for a touring set-up. For more serious climbs they would have used a rando-clip, a device that would have freed their heel for climbing with skins or even gone on foot with crampons. Once at the summit or top of the couloir these clips would be removed and safely stowed in the rucksack. The trade was downhill performance for a considerable amount of weight, both climbing and in the rucksack. Even serious ski tourers might have eschewed the rando skis on offer and have mounted their bindings on piste skis, although probably in a shorter length than they would have used on groomed slopes.

Wyoming 22 snakes through Teton Pass which harbors some of the best backcountry skiing/boarding, hiking, biking etc. in the country. This mountain pass is not for the faint of heart. At a brake smoking 10% grade, it is steep but not by any means impassable (Although Mother Nature does show us her power from time to time, resulting in snow/mud slides over the road, closures due to avalanche control, and the tireless efforts of the WYDOT

These descriptions of the weather conditions and road navigability are not to scare anyone, simply to educate. "The Pass", when used/traveled safely, can be a magnificently beautiful drive, an incredible day of hiking for the "turns you earn", or simply the gateway to wonderful Teton Valley, Idaho.

If, you are heading up to the pass for a day of turns, first and foremost we advocate SAFE backcountry skiing/boarding. Be sure to bring an avalanche transceiver, probe poles, shovel, etc... and DO NOT ski alone. With that said, go forth and enjoy this triumph of nature, and the power of plate tectonics. It will be obvious where to park when you reach the top. You'll be at 8,400 ft. enjoy " The Pass "!
