Packs Built for the Backcountry
The Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2003 came to Salt Lake City from Jan. 30 - Feb. 3, 2003. We were on-hand to cover some of the newest products of interest to both our readers and us. With everyone venturing in the backcountry these days, we thought it wise to cover the piece of equipment that allows you to carry the other important piecesthe pack. Backcountry ski packs have been around for years as smaller backpacks with the ability to carry skis in an A-frame style. That's pretty much all you needed. Well, for short bootpacks, resort backcountry or even moderately long treks back up to the ridge, nothing beats the ease of the cross-carrying ability of DaKine's line of backcountry packs. So, DaKine pretty much pioneered that design and with that, injected some new energy into this market segment. It seems like other manufacturers are stepping into the fray and finally offering backcountry-specific packs with the day-trip or in-bounds/out-of-bounds treks common at today's resorts. Surprisingly, many mainstream backpack manufacturers like Mountainsmith and Gregory do not offer their packs with cross-carrying capability. It seems like a small detail that many people appreciate so much.

During the winter, Red Mountain Pass and the Sneffels Range are a ski touring paradise with a great diversity of terrain to suit all ability levels. We offer Custom Ski programs that are tailored to individual goals and designed to fit personal schedules. CUSTOM SKI PROGRAM INFORMATION Avalanche Education The San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado are blanketed with abundant snowfall from November through May each year. The San Juan's are notorious for having some of the most treacherous avalanche conditions in the country due to the steep terrain and weakly-bonded snowpack. However, there are few better places to learn about avalanche awareness than the San Juan's and we are fortunate to have some of the country's finest avalanche forecasters teaching our courses. A new telemark specific magazine. Why? Because we deserve it. Susie and Matt talk turkey.
Descender: How did Telemark Skier come about, and what were your motivations?
Matt: Telemark Skier is an idea that Susie Sutphin has had brewing for several years. Now you'll have to verify this with her, but her direct involvement with Couloir began because she had an interest in starting her own magazine. She was living in Summit County, Colorado at the time, learned about Couloir and ultimately decided it would be easier to learn about the world of magazines rather than launch into it blindly. At the 2002 Winter Outdoor Research show in Salt Lake City, Jeff Wright of USTSA and Susie had a conversation that rekindled Susie's original magazine idea. She sold Craig on the idea, and then one day this spring while we were skiing at Alpine Meadows she asked me if I was interested in throwing my hat into the ring. So...she's the ring leader. Susie: I don't know about ring leader. It is definitely a team effort and without everyone's contribtibution the concept would have stayed just that, a concept. It is a truly a dream come true to see this idea come to fruition. During this production process, I keep having flash backs to the day six years ago when I got the idea to start a tele-magazine. I think I was having a quarter-life crisis on deciding what I was going to do with my life when it hit me. It's a good feeling when you see your goals actually get reached.

WASHINGTONS BACKCOUNTRY SKIING OLYMPICS
an article by, Jack Ganster...
The Olympic Mountains of Washington are acknowledged among backpackers worldwide for their spectacular scenery, wild beaches and temperate rain forest. Yet it’s backcountry skiing remains more of a local phenomenon. With nearly one million acres, Olympic National Park offers epic ski trip potential. But the long and difficult approaches to much of the high country keep all but the most serious out of the deep backcountry. However, the ease of access to off-piste skiing at the Hurricane Ridge area is unsurpassed. Located 17 miles from the city of Port Angeles even the access by car is quick and easy. At just 5,240 feet, Hurricane Ridge receives an average annual snowfall of over 400 inches. This amount of snow equates to a serious snow pack well into June, and often into July. The view of Mt. Olympus, Mt. Carrie, and the interior Olympic Mountain Range are nothing short of spectacular.
The Runs
While turns are easy to get to, don’t expect an all day up, 4,000-foot one-run day. Most of the runs at “The Ridge” are in the 500- to 1,500-foot range. This does make for great yo-yo skiing. Taking multiple laps in an area, using and reusing your up track, and just covering the hillside with tracks is most gratifying. There are so many areas to choose from that you’ll need to focus on just a few. Don’t be surprised if you get side-tracked on your way to one of the more prominent areas.
Down from the car
Until I began skiing at Hurricane Ridge, I never experienced skiing down right from the parking lot. But it’s true. Just past the day lodge you can strap them on and start turning. The beginning of this south-facing run gets hammered by wind, so don’t get discouraged by the conditions or lack of steepness. Once you drop about 100 vertical feet, things get interesting, with 30- to 40-degree slopes and plenty of room to turn among widely spaced trees. With a total vertical of 500 to 600 feet, this run is a great place to “squeeze one in” while you wait for friends to arrive.

Skiing and snowshoeing in Colorado's backcountry:
East of the Continental Divide in northern Colorado
November 16, 1997 F or some, winter recreation means driving to a ski resort, paying for a lift ticket, and skiing groomed runs. Others, however, seek a purer outdoor experience. These people head to the "backcountry" of Colorado. Colorado's Front Range offers many opportunities to get into the backcountry for skiing, winter hiking and snowshoeing. From Cameron Pass northwest of Fort Collins to Golden Gate Canyon State Park northwest of Golden, there are several "points of entry" into spectacular scenery and trails you won't see from the chairlift at a ski resort. At the same time, however, backcountry use is skyrocketing, and at some trailheads it isn't unusual to find many cars on a weekend morning. Solitude is becoming a prized experience even in the backcountry I n addition, as Jeff Lukas, information specialist for the Boulder Ranger District of Roosevelt National Forest, pointed out, snowshoe use on backcountry trails has greatly increased over the past few winters. "The more difficult the trail, the more snowshoers you'll find relative to skiers," he said. The prevailing trail ethic is for snowshoers to make a separate trail to the side of ski tracks, if possible. "Trampling on a ski trail really decreases the value of the experience for skiers," said Lukas. The primary, closest backcountry areas are in the following areas: Cameron Pass off Colo. 14 west of Fort Collins, Rocky Mountain National Park, Roosevelt National Forest and Golden Gate Canyon State Park. Most park rangers are eager to share information about trails and conditions with the public, and it's best to have at least one or two maps of an area you're visiting. Many areas fall within avalanche zones and rangers strongly suggest visitors call the Colorado Avalanche Center at (303) 482-0457 before embarking into the backcountry.

Having not ventured out for a long time, Mark convinced me to camp out on the ridge high above the Angeles Crest Highway. The weather forecast snow down to 5000', but how likely was this given that it was mid may in Southern California. We hiked up to our campsite, and had a few hours to kill before dark. The snow conditions were not great for skiing, so we found a few other things to do. Mark - always looking for a good photo. We then set up our tent and cooked a good feed before sleeping. The next morning we awoke to find it snowing lightly. Mark by the tent the next morning after fresh snowfall. We packed up quickly in the cold, and proceeded to ski the 1" of fresh powder, on the rather firm base. Mark making the best of the 1" of powder Al enjoying the descent. So the skiing or weather wasn't that great, but it is always good to get into the outdoors. Besides, this was just the beginning of the storm that ended up bringing 2 feet of powder to Mt. Baldy in May

Travel for Backcountry Skiing and Snowboarding
Ken Roberts and Sharon Marsh Roberts
We often travel on airplanes to get to our backcountry tours in a variety of places around the world (some of which are shown in the stories and pictures on this website). And we usually like to meet other people when we get there sometimes local backcountry skiers and snowboarders, but often other folks who came from some other place in the world. So we ski in Washington with people from California, and snowboard in California with people from Washington. We tour in Utah with people from Italy, and in Switzerland with partners from Utah.
Plans and Mailings
Several times a year, we send E-mail about our plans for traveling for backcountry skiing and snowboarding and sometimes about other folks' plans that we know about. If you'd like to be included in some of those mailings about plannings, please send us mail , and tell us you want that and include some about yourself and your backcountry interests and abilities. If you're organizing a trip that you think we might be interested in, by all means

Backcountry Skiing The Spearhead Traverse, which starts at Whistler and finishes at Blackcomb, is a well-marked backcountry route that has become extremely popular. Garibaldi Provincial Park (tel. ) maintains marked backcountry trails at Diamond Head, Singing Pass, and Cheakamus Lake. These are ungroomed and unpatrolled trails, and you have to be self-reliantyou should be at least an intermediate skier, bring appropriate clothing and avalanche gear, and know how to use it. NORTH VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Two orphaned grizzly bears emerged from hibernation earlier than expected and made a brief getaway from a wildlife refuge, forcing the closure of a popular ski hill.
Grouse Mountain, one of the top tourist attractions in the Vancouver area, was closed for about two hours Monday as conservation officers recaptured Grinder and Coola and moved the two groggy male bears, each about six feet tall, to another den.
