Before Your Trip
E As winter snows start to melt, emerging vegetation is revealed. Please stay off these fragile areas. Spring skiing opportunities remain at Granite Park, Many Glacier, and Logan Pass, but remember, warming conditions greatly increase avalanche activity. Most ski routes are not marked. Pay attention to descriptions and local landmarks. A topographic map will help. Arduous cross park trips contain extreme avalanche and terrain hazards and should be attempted only by experienced and well equipped parties. A permit is required for backcountry camping. Practice "Leave No Trace" camping techniques described in the information provided with your permit. Skiers and snowshoers please register at the trailhead registration boxes. Climbers should complete the Voluntary Climbers Registration form, available at ranger stations and the Apgar Visitor Center. Pets are not allowed on trails, unplowed roads, in the backcountry or off leash. Snowmobiles are not permitted anywhere in Glacier National Park. Avalanches Glacier is part of the Northwest Montana Avalanche Warning System, which provides a weekly assessment of local avalanche conditions. Forecasts are updated each Friday morning during the avalanche season, and broadcast by local radio stations. Information can also be obtained by calling 257-8402 or 1-800-526-5329.

Skiing
Left: Winter skiing on wind-swept snow, near Cameron Pass. Right: Backcountry skiing in The San Juan Mountains, south-western Colorado. I Left: Gibon landing from outer space, Montgomery Pass. As to where to go from Fort Collins... Cameron Pass is about an hour away and there are quite a few things to do there: trees, steeper couloirs... There seems to be a lot of interesting stuff in Indian Peaks, but there are several hours of totally flat ground to get there, so it's a pain. We went once with the skis for a closer look at Longs Peak: it's so windy up there that we carried the skis up and down, walking on bare rocks. Too bad, Longs look like a perfect steep-skiing mountain. It sometimes gets skied, but I guess you need to be lucky. A bunch of friends came from France in early April, dejected by the lack of snow in the Alps in 2001. So we took them on a tour of the few places we knew round here and then they went on their own in the Vail / Breckenridge area.

Cloud Seas
A journal and growing archive of backcountry skiing and other journeys above the clouds in the Cascades and beyond
This site started off as a one stop weather page for my own neurotic checks of the weather and conditions. I've continued to add comments and photos from ski trips in the Cascades (mostly Mt. Hood - my own backyard) and some points further afield - a way to recall past trips and jones for the next one... The Pacific Northwest possesses a lifetime of opportunities, and there are many others with whom I share a passion for backcountry skiing and inspiring views. A quick web search will easily link you to trip reports or resources that either inspired me to go to these places, or inspire me to return. All material on this website - photos and content - is ©2004 by Jim Carpenter unless otherwise noted.

Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone:
    Backcountry Skiing in Montana
Your Choice of Lifts Special Precautions Best Bets for the Backcountry Your Choice of Lifts: Helicopter, Snowmobile, Snowcat, or Feet Certainly, Montana can brag about the absence of lift lines at our downhill resorts. But if you're one of those people looking for absolute solitude, we have the backcountry terrain of your dreams. The big question, of course, is: How do you get to the backcountry? After all, the term "backcountry," by definition, means it's off the well-worn path. You won't find a nice high-speed quad to the trailhead for these treks. There are probably no more extreme extremes in backcountry skiing than setting off under your own power from one of our hundreds of trailheads toward a snow covered crag with visions of first tracks... possibly first tracks ever... helping make every step lighter. With the proper equipment, a bit of hiking will deliver you to an alpine peak or couloir filled with untouched powder. However, this isn't a decision to take lightly, as the terrain can be dangerous if you're unprepared (please see next section). On the other hand, guided helicopter, snowcat or snowmobile tours are available in some of the most challenging and beautiful terrain in the world. Let someone else do the hard work while you enjoy the view, and of course you'll be pounding new powder before anyone else has gotten off the chairlift. If you want to take a guided heli-ski trip, Montana has guides that can help you.

    69. Backcountry Skiing: General Info And Disclaimer
backcountry skiing General Info and Disclaimer, Yvon Canard friend at home in their MiniMid. Preparing for backcountry skiing takes years of commitment.
    http://www.bobskiing.com/skiinfo.htm
Most of the tours listed at this site are best classified as "ski mountaineering", and require a high degree of ski experience as well as general backcountry experience. A few of the trips require advanced mountaineering experience. Most of these tours also include some degree of avalanche hazard. Backcountry ski mountaineering is physically demanding, requires specialized skills, and it's pretty gear-intensive too. Preparing you for backcountry ski trips is far beyond the scope of this web site. However, the following list is a good start. This may seem like a lot of tough prerequesites. Preparing for backcountry skiing takes years of commitment. But it's worth it. To me, there is no richer experience than to be on skis in the High Sierra backcountry. Watch for Snow Slippers!
    • Develop very strong backcountry skills . Do plenty of summer backpacking, perhaps including some travel far away from trails. Master topo map reading and compass skills, and never venture into the backcountry without topo map(s) and a compass.
    • You should have very solid ski technique . You should have an efficient diagonal stride. Be able to make strong telemark and parallel turns. Practice at downhill resorts, and practice in difficult snow conditions. A steep remote slope (with a 40-pound pack) isn't the best place to learn ski technique.

If you have any questions, or would like further information, please do not hesitate in contacting the M.A.S. office - we love to talk about our work! top Backcountry skiers have several equipment options to choose from, including telemark, randonee and alpine trekkers. Telemark - a.k.a. "free-heel" or nordic downhill. The boot is only attached in the toe area with a cable or 3-pin design. Graceful to watch and difficult to master.
Randonee - a French dictionary defines randonee as "a hike". In skiing this means alpine style skis (often shorter & wider) with aspecial binding and lighter boots which assist striding. The binding releases in the heel and pivots at the toe for easy climbing, then the heel re-locks to the ski during descents. This setup allows alpine skiers an easy transition into backcountry travel and is very popular in Europe.
Alpine Trekkers - An alternative to dedicated randonee bindings. Trekkers click into regular alpine bindings, then the boots attaches to the Trekkers. Heels are now free for climbing. At the top, remove the Trekkers and climbing skins. You are then free to descend on your normal bindings and skis. (available for rent)

Through the use of chair lifts, bus shuttles and "soft" boundaries*, M.A.S. can help you find some of the best snow and untracked slopes at the Bear Valley Mountain Resort (BVMR). With M.A.S. guides it doesn't take long to safely reach these secluded areas, leave your own tracks, and hear only the occasional birdcall or laughter of your friends. In general, when the "soft" boundaries are open skiers and snowboarders have the ability to legally access areas outside the traditional boundaries of the ski resort. These areas can be remote and dangerous and should not be considered safe. Avalanche awareness is critical and many natural obstacles exist (e.g. variable snow conditions, cliffs, rocks, tree stumps and of course no trail markers). You are basically on your own in these areas. Avalanche safety equipment and safe backcountry travel methods will be used on all M.A.S. programs. M.A.S. provides avalanche transceivers, shovels and probes, including instruction and practice on how to use them. M.A.S. guides are trained in avalanche science, rescue techniques, and wilderness medicine. Please keep in mind that competence in these skills is only achieved through personal investments in time, training and money.

Spring Thoughts From the Executive Director
May 11, 2004 Ban snowmobiles in Yellowstone, letter says. "Three former National Park Service directors and three other former high-ranking officials on Monday urged Interior Secretary Gale Norton to ban snowmobiles from Yellowstone National Park. ... The letter, like others in the past, pointed out that Park Service and Environmental Protection Agency studies say that the best option for protecting air quality, noise levels, wildlife and human health in Yellowstone is to phase out snowmobiles." ( Billings Gazette May 10, 2004 Local snowmobiler protests latest recreation path rules. "...county officials say a majority of residents are concerned that snowmobiles are noisy and interfere with wildlife. Regulations that have been on the books for years state that snowmobilers can ride along the side of most roads, but not on rec paths, said assistant county attorney Frank Celico. If he can't ride on rec paths, Casselberry said he's willing to ask the U.S. Forest Service to allow snowmobiles in wilderness areas such as Horseshoe Gulch at Tiger Road or under the powerlines between Swan Meadow Village at Royal Coachmen Drive." ( Summit Daily News Don't miss all the other latest news The Forest Service has presented several new changes to the winter use at Vail Pass, so if you have experience up there, we'd love to have your input

Backcountry Skiing The sport of telemark skiing is similar to cross-country skiing, but with more of an alpine ski and boot. This type of skiing offers the gentle gliding over flat terrain of cross-country skiing, as well as the ability to navigate steep snowy hillsides. Telemark skiing originated from Norway, where Norwegians have been skiing for over 4000 years. Skiing was a natural mode of travel in Norway due to the long winters, and a gentleman named Sondre Norheim first demonstrated the telemark turn (later called the Christiana turn) in 1868. Telemark skis are shorter, stiffer and a little wider than cross-country skis and offer more control especially when traversing down a steep hill. While ski resorts see lots of telemark skiers intermingle with alpine skiers on the hill, most telemark skiers search out the solitude of the quiet winter backcountry for miles of untracked powder. However, with the freedom to travel down steep snowy slopes in the backcountry comes the responsibility to carry the proper avalanche and safety equipment. Most outdoor sporting goods stores in Montana carry a variety of telemark ski equipment and clothing. Telemark skiing also requires more practice to learn. Good instruction, lots of practice, and carrying the necessary safety equipment are highly recommended before traveling out onto the winter landscape.
