May 2004 Occasional updates are being made to the website, and work continues on the long-awaited Cascade ski guidebook , with field research now being done on numerous routes throughout the range. I have now skied or climbed over 90 routes on all 28 of the Cascade volcanoes included in the book, including 2 summit ski descents of Mount Shasta within the past month. Some progress is also being made on the written version of the book, see the recently posted Book Cover Design The online version of the Cascade ski guidebook and the entire Ring of Fire section now use a MySQL database and PHP scripts to dynamically generate and serve the pages. That's me, Gordon Schryer, looking back in awe at the Sharkfin and it's Eastern Crevasses and Ice-fall on the Garibaldi Neve Traverse. We traveled through that pile in TOTAL white-out... I'm still dumb-founded today! I'm 34 and have been hiking, climbing and ski mountaineering for over half my life. I am quite committed to it now. I completed the Seattle Mountaineer's Basic Climbing course in 1998. I began the Intermediate Climbing course as well as the Ski-Mountaineering course in 1999. I graduated the intermediate course in Summer of 2000 and became a climb leader with the club in December 2000. Then I fell on my head! Feel free to ask questions.... I might answer them!

The essential element of the alpine touring setup is the binding, which must allow the heel to be freed for uphill travel and yet secure it firmly for downhill skiing, while allowing the protection of releasability in case of a severe fall. A good alpine touring binding such as the Fritschi Diamir (left; info at Black Diamond and also the Swiss Fritschi site
Two other solid choices are the Silvretta 404 (left), which is THE classic randonnee binding, and the Silvretta Easy-Go, an updated and improved version of 404. These accept nearly any type of downhill, randonnee, or plastic climbing boot on account of their rigid wire toe bail, but they do not offer any release at the toe, only at the heel. New in 2000 are several versions of the Easy-Go series, the 500, 505, and 555. For those who use climbing boots instead of true randonnee boots (see below), the Silvretta 404 and 500 are the best choice, and are nearly identical except for lightweight carbon-fiber rails on the newer 500. The 505 and 555 also have the carbon fiber rails, and offer the convenience of a step-in heel, but because of this may not fit certain climbing boots. The Silvretta SL (no longer made) and the popular

Colorado Backcountry Skiing
Volume 1
Aspen, Independence Pass, Alfred Braun Huts, Friends Hut, Carbondale, more... Louis Dawson's first guidebook, Colorado High Routes , was published more than 15 years ago. High Routes covered Colorado ski, snowboard, and telemark mountaineering in a detailed and "been there" style that set the tone for many subsequent guide books, both from Lou and other authors. High Routes went out of print, and skiers in central Colorado protected their old copies of the volume like religious relics, cracking the spines of their dusty tomes to seek yet another of central Colorado's special high routes. Enter Lou's new guidebook, Dawson's Guide to Colorado Backcountry Skiing . Building on the solid foundation of High Routes , this book again raises the bar for North American guidebook quality and detail.

Rainier around Paradise can be all that the name implies, at least on an uncrowded weekday with good visibility. On crowded weekends or in storminess it's a different story. Nonetheless, with year-round road access to 5500 feet, Paradise offers great trips spanning the entire range of backcountry skiing: beginner cross-country skiing, long telemark skiing tours with plenty of turning, and long boot up-ski down snowboarding, randonee or telemark skiing runs. In addition, the Paradise area has some of the easiest access, and smoothest, snow for summer into fall ski trips, and it is typically not found on the Muir snowfield. Mt. Rainier, south side:

Backcountry powder in the Purcell Mountains
For twenty eight seasons Ptarmigan Tours has offered hut-to-hut ski tours in the Purcell Mountains of southeastern British Columbia. All tours include transportation to and from the trailhead, helicopter access, meals, accommodation, instruction and guiding. Accommodations are in a wood-heated log lodge and cabins, where hearty meals are served family-style around the large dining table. A small hydro charging system supplies the lodge with light. Close by is the shower house and Canada's highest backcountry hot tub to soothe tired muscles and enjoy the winter evening.

Ski weeks
The Purcell Mountains are ideally situated from a skiers perspective. We get much more snow than the Rockies does, and we get many more clear weather days than the Coast Mountains. Deep, dry, fresh powder - we've got the best of both worlds! The extremely varied terrain of Boulder provides exciting areas for skiers of all ability levels to practice their telemarking, randonee or boarding skills. There is oodles of gently rolling terrain for beginners to cruise on, a wide variety of treed and alpine runs for intermediate skiers, and steep chutes abound for the expert. Day tours from Boulder visit the lovely rolling alplands, lakes and larch glades of the upper basin; Boulder Pass with its views of the Southern Rockies and Central Purcells; Ptarmigan Mountain with its many continuous downhill runs; the Lake District with its spectacular cirque runs from Mt. Higgins and Crosscut Mountain; the extensive tree skiing of the City Park area; The Roll with its open, steep chutes and glades, the endless run down Telemark Hill with its consistent intermediate pitch; the steeps of Cardiac Arrest and Coronary Bypass for the not-so-faint-of-hearted; and Johns Run, a wide, open run down to the lodge. For those wanting to get off the snow and onto the rocks, there are many opportunities for peak bagging and ridge traverses.
