ASH/Advertising and Sponsorship/Sports and Cultural Sponsorship Sports and Cultural Sponsorship Last updated June 26 2001 The tobacco industry pumps tens of millions of pounds a year into sponsoring sports and arts events in the UK and overseas. They claim that they are doing this out of a sense of philanthropic “duty”. However, in their internal documents, they are remarkably frank about the real reasons why. In a 1989 internal memo from RJ Reynolds, the industry says: “We’re in the cigarette business. We’re not in the sports business. We use sports as an avenue for advertising our products. We can go into an area where we’re marketing an event, measure sales during the event and measure sales after the event, and see an increase in sales.” Formula 1 Motor racing is particlularly important to the tobacco industry. Barrie Gill, chief executive of Championship Sports Specialists Ltd., a sports sponsorship company, explains why: “It’s the ideal sport for sponsorship. It’s got glamour and worldwide television coverage. It’s a 10- month activity involving 16 races in 14 countries with drivers from 16 nationalities. After football it's the Number One multinational sport. It’s got total global exposure, total global hospitality, total media coverage and 600 million people watching it on TV every fortnight. It’s macho, it’s excitement, it’s colour, it’s international, it’s glamour. They’re there to get visibility. They’re there to sell cigarettes” (1984) The tobacco industry maintain that to ban their sponsorship of sport and the arts would severely damage the events they are supporting. However, all the evidence shows that this is not the case. These pages examine in more detail the reasons for tobacco sponsorship – none of which are philanthropic. These reasons range from trying to get round advertising restrictions by the back door, to trying to buy a bit a respectability for companies rocked by accusations of smuggling and racketeering. It also debunks some of the myths attached to tobacco sponsorship.
