NCARES is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Our primary focus as a new entity involves raising awareness in NC about the growing issue of dog fighting and the link that exists between animal abuse and violence against humans. Dependent on donations, we also help low-income families pay for unaffordable veterinary care, low-cost spay/neuter of their pets, and provide/arrange transport for rescued animals to their new homes. Another, and probably the involvement that will have the greatest impact, is the implementation of a Humane Education (specifically, a Character Education) program in NC elementary and middle schools. We are working with The Healing Species to bring their highly effective program, which was started in South Carolina, to our state. We will be attending the NC Safe Schools Conference in Research Triangle Park, NC in order to present this program to the NC Department of Public Instruction. Character Education teaches children compassion and responsibility, which are learned, rather than violence and indifference. Children who have experienced abuse or neglect learn that instead of continuing this cycle, they can heal their hearts and spirits by doing nice things for otherspeople and animals. They also come to realize that companion animals, like themselves, are not lives than can be neglected or mistreated. These children are the adults of a less-violent tomorrow, who will learn how to properly care for their animals today in order to minimize the problems of abuse, neglect, and overpopulation that our country is currently facing.
