That one, Buffalo s Billy Shaw, played his entire career in the american footballLEAGUE. The american football LEAGUE HALL OF FAME is CONTINUALLY EVOLVING.
http://www.conigliofamily.com/AFLHallofFame.htm
The "Pro Football Hall of Fame" in Canton, Ohio, supposedly represents all of professional football. Yet, of its two hundred and twenty-one members, only ONE was never in the NFL. That one, Buffalo's Billy Shaw, played his entire career in the AMERICAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE. Yet, at his induction, he wore a yellow coat emblazoned with the NFL logo. Great players like Tom Sestak, Lionel Taylor, Johnny Robinson, Abner Haynes, and numerous other American Football League stars are ignored by the "Pro Football Hall of Fame", because they played in the wrong league.
This, then, is a Hall of Fame devoted to the players of a league that had a profound impact on professional football; a sport that today reflects the AFL's influence in everything but name.
Our Hall of Fame list of American Football League players, coaches, and contributors includes those who, against tremendous odds, got into the "Pro Football Hall of Fame".
But it also includes (with names in BLUE ) the AFL stars who until now, have not received the honor they so richly deserve. Names in

American Football League
The genesis of modern professional football:
  • Two-point conversion Official time on scoreboard clock Player identification on uniforms Shared gate and television receipts Network-televised games Colorful, imaginative uniforms and team logos OFFENSE!!!
So why isn't pro football called the A FL? Below are excerpts from several sources on the influence that
the American Football League has had on modern professional football. From Wikipedia , on-line encyclopedia:
Some innovative rules changes were also put into place, such as the two-point conversion (later adopted by the NFL in the 1990s); the use of the scoreboard clock as the official game clock (adopted by the NFL when the leagues mergedprior to this time, the official game clock was maintained by an official on the sidelines, and often did not match the scoreboard clock very closely); the use of player names on jerseys, (also adopted by the NFL); and the sharing of gate and television revenues between home and visiting teams (also adopted by the NFL). In short, the NFL adopted virtually every pioneering aspect of the American Football League , except its name.

History of the game in Ireland It was an advertisement in Ireland's national press that heralded the arrival of the Irish American Football Association in the Autumn of 1984. Sixty-five players attended a first training session in Phoenix Park, and in January 1985 the first American Football team in Ireland was formed - the Dublin Celts. The Celts would become, over the next few years, Ireland's dominant team. In October of 1985, the Celts played their first competitive match, as they to play the Bristol Bombers. They won the game with a 32-0 shutout. In February 1986, they returned to England to beat the Wirral Wolves 14-0, and the March they defeated the Newcastle Senators 16-14 (in England again). 1987 was to become the first official league season in Irish history. 11 teams reformed their own organisation to form the Irish American Football League. The Celts then went through the first IAFL unbeaten, and clinched the first Irish title with victory against Craigavon Cowboys in the final. Victory for the Celts gained themselves entry to the prestigious EuroBowl competition in 1988, that was to be held in England. To qualify they had to travel to Vienna to take on the Austrian champions, the Graz Giants. Unfortunately, the Celts lost 36-12. After retaining their title in 1988 (with a 34-6 victory against the Belfast Blitzers in Shamrock Bowl III), the Celts were back for another crack at European opposition in 1989. This time they would have to face the British champions, the Birmingham Bulls. The Bulls won 29-3.

This section will provide a quick overview of how football got started to give general knowledge about how the sport became so popular today.
    In the Beginning
The story of football began sometime during the 19th century in England when a soccer player, frustrated at using only his feet to manipulate the ball, decided to simply pick it up and run with it. Although it was clearly against the rules of soccer, other players soon found the new way of playing soccer appealing and thus, the sport of rugby was born.
The new sport soon became a world-wide success that found its way into America by the mid-1800s. Played by many northeastern colleges, it was not long before Harvard University and Yale University met in Massachussetts in 1876 to formalize the rules to rugby that were similar to those in England. There were differences however: instead of playing with a round ball, the schools opted for an egg-shaped and the game's name was changed from rugby to football. To finalize the meeting, an organization called the Intercollegiate Football Association(IFA) was created to preside over the Americanized sport.
Football was still mainly American rugbymuch different from the popular sport known today. Over the course of three years starting in 1880, Yale player Walter Camp eventually convinced the IFA to change a series of rules in football to create a game that is very similar today. For that, Camp is considered by historians as the father of modern football.
