The most Famous sytem of AikiJuJutsu is Takeda/ Daito Ryu AikiJuJutsu (There are others). It's supposedly one of the oldest indigenous forms of Japanese Ju Jutsu, founded around the 11th Century AD.
There are systems called AikiJutsu, some of which apparently have the same Circle principals and concepts of 'Aiki' as Aiki Ju Jutsu (something beyond the mere physical), some of those Aiki systems are quite old and some are relatively modern inventions.
Aikido comes from a combination of Aiki JuJutsu and Kenjutsu and other sword methods and is obviously, a relatively modern invention.
Systems such as Korean Hapkido claim to have come from Aiki Ju Jutsu, something that alot of Aiki people deny. gojuman Aiki jitsu in our style refers to mainly joint manipulation and there by controlling or taking down your opponent by twisting the wrist, etc..

    Review 1: some interest

As an aikido practitioner I thought this may show me more about the roots of aikido. In a limited way it does with interesting snippet on fire and water hand (pointing fingers up and down) and the use of making a fist to counter kote-gaeshi. The photos are also very clear and it is well presented. However you feel that aikido has moved on from these techniques in developing far more responsiveness and fluidity of movement than presented here. Only a little extra is gained if you are an experienced aikidoka. If you are a beginner you may feel the descriptions are too sparse and the names of techniques are different, though the clarity of photos makes it better than some of the poorer aikido books out there. This book is probably most suited to beginner to intermediate aikijitsu practitioners.
Review 2: overview of daito -ryu in context of modern aikido training THERE IS NO doubt that a convenient memory gap exists in the commonly acknowledged ancestry of the relatively modern art of Aikido. Many Aikido students do not feel comfortable with the raw violence of the forbearer of their art and would prefer to imagine that O Sensei developed Aikido out of nothing but his own depth of understanding of the universe.

Aiki Jutsu and JuJutsu, are Martial Arts probably developed from or in parallel with Daito Ryu Aikijutsu, the only "soft style" Japanese Martial art that I can trace back to the 11th century with any degree of certainty. The category of "soft arts" defines those styles that work by moving to deflect or avoid an attack rather than meet it head on, they are not soft in the sense of easy or ineffective (Soft could also be translated as gentle, pliable or flexible, so take your pick)!! Aikido , only winning and surviving. The main difference between AikiJutsu and JuJutsu is the amount of movement within any particular technique, with Aiki Jitsu being slightly more flowing with a tendency to larger movements and JuJutsu having a tighter, more direct approach, sometimes referred to as the path of the small circle. Both styles accentuate strikes as a primary disabling movement but JuJutsu is more pragmatic in the type of technique used. Modern JuJutsu borrows good techniques from many other styles and adapts them to fit within the general framework of the art. I nstructors in these two styles believe that they are the best all round defensive systems in the world, although exponents of other Martial Arts, fairly predictably would tend to disagree.

by Russell St. Hilaire Raymond "Duke" Moore was born in San Francisco on April 19, 1915. In his youth he loved boxing and wrestling. In 1941, Duke became a student of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu under Ray Law at the University Ave dojo in Oakland, CA. Ray Law was a blackbelt under Seishiro Okazaki of Hawaii, the founder of Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. Duke excelled at judo and jujitsu, and learned the Kodenkan "boards" (requirements for blackbelt written on woodern boards which hung in the dojo), but was not satisfied with all aspects of the system. Thus, in 1943, he decided to go to New York City and study judo with George Yoshida. While living in New York City, he also used all his spare time to train with jujitsu master Kiyose Nakae. Nakae gave Moore private lessons on two tatami mats in the master's apartment. In 1944, Duke finally won his blackbelt in competition, and it was awarded to him by George Yoshida.

    History of Aikido
    ORIGINS
It is difficult to speak with certainty about the very early history of Aikido. Tradition suggests that it is possible to trace back the origins of Aikido to Prince Teijun, the sixth son of the Japanese Emperor Seiwa (850-880 A.D.).
However, the first important figure in the history of Aikido was a descendant of Prince Teijun, Minamoto no Yoshimitsu, who lived from 1037 to 1127. Yoshimitsu was the third son in a family already famous for its military accomplishments. His father was a general in the service of the Emperor. The most illustrious member of Yoshimitsu's family was his older brother Yoshiie, who commanded a number of notable victories chronicled in the "Tale of Mutsu." In a famous incident in 1082, during the Gosannen War, the two brothers joined forces to attack Kanazawa Castle. Yoshimitsu noticed a disturbance in the flight pattern of wild geese overhead and thus avoided riding into ambush.
Though Yoshimitsu never achieved the renown of his older brother, he distinguished himself as a warrior. He excelled in spear, sword and unarmed techniques, as well as in archery. At this point in the development of Japanese military arts, mounted archery was considered more important than swordsmanship. It is notable that the two schools of mounted archery which survive into modern times (Takeda Ryu and Ogasawara Ryu), both trace their origin back to Minamoto no Yoshimitsu.
It is said that Yoshimitsu dissected cadavers to increase his understanding of the workings of bone, muscle and connective tissues. From this research he added to his repertoire of unarmed techniques, then called "Tai Jutsu."

The Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu Web Site is your best source for information on Daito-ryu, direct from Kondo Katsuyuki, Head of the Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu Headquarters Dojo, and Director of the Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu organization. Kondo Katsuyuki
    The Essence of
    Daito-ryu Aiki Jujutsu
Arts such as sumo, judo, karate, and wrestling, are often called "fighting arts." While it is not our purpose here to argue whether or not this term is appropriate for these budo and sports, we can state definitively that Daito-ryu aiki jujutsu is not at all a "fighting art" in the sense that these others might be considered to be. A look at the history of Daito-ryu shows clearly that it was developed in large part as a means of self-defense, particularly one to be used by warriors while inside the palace. This may be seen in the inclusion and emphasis on oshikiiuchi . In short, Daito-ryu was developed as a way to effectively and efficiently neutralize violence, not cause it. This is in perfect agreement with the Chinese character for the "bu" in budo, one interpretation of which is "to stop halberds." This is why that although we have forms used to demonstrate aikijutsu, there are no competitive matches.
