Aerobics The growing popularity of aerobic dance exercise over the past three decades was a major driving force behind the tremendous growth of the fitness industry and the emergence of the modern health club as we know it. Nowadays health clubs and fitness centres usually offer a range of 'aerobics' classes. The classes usually have different names, formats and descriptions and will vary from one venue to the next. Some classes have unique, catchy names used specifically for marketing purposes. Classes can be highly choreographed, which requires a high level of co-ordination and skill. Currently popular 'aerobics' formats include Hi-Lo, Low Impact, Martial Arts-based Aerobics, Kickboxing, Latin, Hip-hop, Funk and Jazz. A variety of equipment-based workouts, such as Step Aerobics and Slide Aerobics, also fall within this category.

by Dr Jeremy Sims If you are looking for a good all-around form of aerobic exercise, why not try water aerobics? Running, jogging and walking underwater in a pool not only strengthens the leg and hip muscles - the quadriceps, hamstrings and gluteals - but helps to develop cardiorespiratory fitness.
If you are a novice to this form of exercise, the key is to take it easy at the start. At first, lightly exercise in the shallow end walking at this stage will be enough. As your confidence improves, move gradually move to thigh-deep then chest deep water, increasing your speed as you do so. Whilst moving, aim to use the water as resistance, landing in a heel-ball-toe action and maintaining an upright stance. Pump your arms as if walking or jogging on land.

What is Aerobic Dancing?
From humble beginnings in the late 1960s, aerobic dance has become a major symbol of the fitness craze that exploded into American culture in the 1980s. It's still one of the most popular ways to get fit and stay fit around the world. More than 24 million people participate in aerobics. Once confined primarily to young women, aerobic dance has blossomed into a sport for both sexes and all age groups to have fun while losing weight and keeping in shape. Essentially an hour's workout set to music, a typical aerobics program begins with 5-10 minutes of warm-ups and stretching, peaks with 20-30 minutes of target heart range dance, can include 20 minutes of a muscle stretching floor program known as body sculpting, and ends with 5-10 minutes of cool-down and more stretching. Programs typically run three to four times a week. The benefits of aerobics include increased cardiopulmonary efficiency, strengthened heart and lungs, improved circulation, lowered cholesterol levels, and stress and anxiety reduction. But it is a strenuous form of exercise, and thorough preparation, wise choice of routines, proper equipment, and consideration of floor surfaces are essential to avoid injury.

ABOUT THIS UNIT Students today are the least physically fit compared to any other generation. As Physical Education instructors, it is imperative that we get the message across to students that they must get involved in some type of physical activity. This unit is developed to introduce students to a cardiovascular program that can be a life long activity. During the course of this unit, the students learn about the key components of physical fitness and how important that it is to their livelihood. The aerobics classes are designed to get students involved and moving to give them a good cardiovascular workout. It is my goal that the students that take part in this class will not only see an improvement in their own physical fitness, but will take life long values with them.
