Introduction
The Methodist Archives and Research Centre (MARC) is the official archive repository of the British Methodist Church. It contains the largest collection of Methodist printed books and manuscripts in Europe, and is regarded as one of the world's most important collections of source material relating to evangelical studies. The books and records contained in the Archives document the activities of the Church on a national level from the early eighteenth century to the present. Local records, such as circuit minutes and accounts, are not held at the MARC but are kept locally. Similarly, records of Methodist overseas missions are not kept here, but are on deposit at the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. This guide, while it is not comprehensive, aims to introduce researchers to selected material deposited in the MARC which is relevant to the study of women and the Methodist Church. It is aimed specifically at postgraduate students but will also be of value to the more general user of the collections.

W omen's Studies provides a scholarly critique of the conventional ideas of what it means to be human and a woman, a critique that is of interest to all scholars and students, male and female. Feminism analyzes the way that women's situation has been shaped by and, in turn shapes the whole social world. International Women's Day 2004

March 8, 2004
"As we mark this year's International Women's Day, we look at the devastating toll the global HIV/AIDS epidemic is taking on women, and the critical role of women in fighting AIDS." United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Nobel Peace Prize 2003 - Shirin Ebadi "...for her efforts for democracy and human rights. She has focused especially on the struggle for the rights of women and children...Ebadi is a conscious Moslem. She sees no conflict between Islam and fundamental human rights. It is important to her that the dialogue between the different cultures and religions of the world should take as its point of departure their shared values." We invite you to major in Women's Studies and join our community. With five full-time faculty in Women's Studies and over 60 affiliate faculty, students have a rich and wide range of courses from which to choose.
We are also the only department on campus that has student representatives formally on our executive committee, helping us to shape our curriculum and advising us so that we most directly meet students' needs.
While sustaining a program of academic excellence, we also encourage our students to do internships in the community at the many local and Bay Area organizations that provide essential services to women and children. This year we will again be able to offer two Community Service Awards to our students. One award, in the amount of $500, will go to a graduating senior. The second award, in the amount of $2,000, will help sustain one of our majors while engaged in community service. Applications are available in the Women's Studies office. Whether or not you decide to major in Women's Studies you are very welcome in our classes.

Program Description Current Program Structure and Requirements: The Program Minor
The Women's Studies Program at Southern Oregon University is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing the teaching and study of women in society, culture, and history. Its major aim is to focus on women as a heterogeneous group that is frequently overlooked by the traditional disciplines within the academic community. Students explore women's lives and cultural contributions, as well as the history of feminism and current feminist approaches to social issues. Women's studies also serves as the focal point at SOU for the study of gender (the social processes and consequences of being male or female). Courses in women's studies examine the numerous ways in which gender shapes both women's and men's experiences throughout life.

What is Women's Studies? Women's Studies is an interdisciplinary undergraduate Program, providing an academic framework and broad-based community for scholarly inquiry focusing on women, gender and sexuality. Exploring gender with the tools of different, and often multiple, disciplines, Women's Studies subjects strive to help MIT students better understand how knowledge and value take different forms depending on a variety of social variables. In the course of their inquiry, students not only learn how to use gender as a category of analysis, but also reflect on the manifestation of gender in their own lives, leading to a range of personal and intellectual discoveries. Although gender is a central component of every subject, the study of gender requires attention to connections between gender, sexuality, race, class, religion, nationality, and other social categories; different subjects shed light on different aspects of such connections. The Program in Women's Studies offers an undergraduate curriculum consisting of core classes and cross-listed subjects from several departments. Students may concentrate, minor and petition for a major departure in WS. There are more than 40 faculty members who are affiliated with the Program from fields as diverse as architecture, history, comparative media studies, brain and cognitive sciences, literature, and political science, for example. The Program in Women's Studies offered twenty-two subjects during the academic year 2002-2003, with approximately 300 students enrolled.

The Minor
The Minor in Women's Studies offers students a range of courses forming a program with an interdisciplinary emphasis on women, their contributions to society, and the effects upon their lives of inequalities based on gender, race, class, sexuality, age, and physical ability. The program provides opportunities to become acquainted with the scholarship that has developed during the last twenty-five years focusing on both the specifics of women's lives and gender as a category of analysis. Students will also have the opportunity to carry out an internship in a setting or agency that addresses issues related to women and gender.
