A Letter From Our Director . . . About Women Dreaming Australia April 1, 2003 Dear Friends: At this difficult time for our world, I have been privileged to be in Australia. While, unfortunately, Australia is governed by a conservative government and is allied with the US in the war on Iraq, it remains a place at a far end of the earth where the sun shines, the people are delightful, and civilized cities lie alongside abundant and exhilarating wilderness. I have met fantastic women's studies and Aboriginal teachers and begun learning about the rich diversity of Australian women. I had not planned to organize an Institute when I came here on my Fulbright Fellowship but I realize this is an opportunity not to be missed. I am very excited to be working with a friend from the University of Sydney, Spider Redgold, who has in-depth experience of Aboriginal communities and who has been part of the women's spirituality movement as well as the peace movement, lesbian community, and alternative health movement in Australia. Spider Redgold Spider and I have pulled together a preliminary description of an exciting new Institute scheduled for our winter and Australian summer. From December 27, 2003 to January 11, 2004, we can all escape winter for a few weeks and come to Sydney and Adelaide, where we can make use of excellent university conference centers at quite reasonable prices.

14. Queer Studies
Program description and philosophy, information on courses, requirements.
http://www.smith.edu/wst/queerstudies.html
Concentration in the Women's Studies Major Queer Studies Go to Women, Race and Culture Concentration Requirements in the Major Main Course Page
  • Queer Studies is an emerging interdisciplinary field whose goal is to analyze antinormative sexual identities, performances, discourses and representations in order ultimately to destabilize the notion of normative sexuality and gender. Queer studies comes out of a critique of identity politics. It rejects essentialized conceptualization[s] of sexuality, gender, and sexual identity as innate or fixed. It represents a deconstruction of hegemonic conceptions of sexual and gender categories within straight, gay and lesbian communities. In queer studies, the interpretation, enactment, and destabilizing of sexual identities is linked to that of gender categories. The queer studies concentration's home in women's studies makes explicit these links between theories of gender and sexuality. In the queer studies concentration students are encouraged to consider the historical and theoretical foundations of queer studies as well as the potential consequences (epistemological and political) of a queer studies critique. This might include attention to the connections between gay and lesbian studies and queer studies, feminist studies and queer studies and the implications of a queer studies critique for other disciplines. Possible areas of focus include: the history of sexuality, social movements, politics, anthropology, literature, theater, art, film, science and sexology, public policy, law, ethnic studies, music, demography, geography, media analysis, philosophy, etc.
