Master in Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) Mission Statement
The program of study leading to the Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree in the College of Urban and Public Affairs provides professional training to students in preparation for careers in the public, private and non-profit sectors of urban and regional planning. The program, which is accredited by the American Planning Accreditation Board , has a strong focus on applications to the profession and the curriculum is carefully structured to provide students with a comprehensive grounding in the skills needed in planning practice. The curriculum ensures that students keep pace with the state of the art in planning theory as well as in practice.
Specializations give students the opportunity for more targeted training in their chosen area of interest. The MURP program assists the College in its professional public service mission by providing high quality applied research and technical assistance for state, metropolitan, and local agencies and organizations. In addition, the program provides continuing education opportunities to local planning professionals to keep them up-to-date in the skills needed in planning practice.

Program Strengths
Urban and regional planning students at CUPA can take advantage of the many strengths of the College and its location in New Orleans. Because the city contains the largest number of historic districts and protected historic structures in the nation, planning students can choose to specialize in the preservation planning area and participate in neighborhood-based projects as a part of the curriculum. A new specialization under development in public culture combines preservation interests with the broad array of urban anthropology and folklife topics showcased in the multi-cultural setting of New Orleans. Those students with an interest in transportation and port-related studies can take advantage of planning opportunities through the work of the

This course provides the background for those entering the urban and regional planning profession. It is the only course in Western Australia accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia. The distinguishing characteristic of this course is the use of interdisciplinary knowledge and techniques in addressing environmental, social and design issues concerning the community. It is now widely accepted that successful human settlements must be properly planned and a range of statutory and non-statutory controls exist at all levels of government to protect the public interest in the development process. The involvement of individuals and community groups in the preparation and implementation of plans is now considered vital to successful development outcomes.
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning forms part of the Faculty of Built Environment, Art and Design at Curtin University of Technology.
The Faculty is progressive and exciting with 25 full time academic staff, some of whom teach on an interdisciplinary basis in two or more of the Faculty's Departments. Numerous industry based practitioners and guest lecturers also teach in the programme.
