: programs The Department offers the following degree programs: Master of Science in Planning (M.S.P.), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), dual degrees in Planning and Law (M.S.P./J.D.) ; and dual degrees in Planning and Public Administration (M.S.P./M.P.A.) . Because of the breadth and diversity of the field, graduate study is considered essential for assuming professional positions and for advancing within the profession. The 'standard' professional degree is the Master's degree, and Master's graduates in planning now hold the overwhelming majority of planning positions. The doctoral degree serves as preparation for academic research, or high level policy and administrative positions. The dual degree programs prepare professionals to work in positions at the nexus of their component professions. The MSP Program offers the option of the Master's International Program whereby MSP graduates obtain a direct placement in the Peace Corps. The Department offers three programs for undergraduates who are interested in planning and urban affairs: a minor in Urban and Regional Planning, a Certificate in Urban and Regional Planning, and a pre-graduate program that permits undergraduates to take graduate-level courses in planning.

Areas of concentration include: land-use and environmental planning; transportation planning; housing and community development; and economic development policy. The faculty at Iowa have published on a diverse range of planning-related topics. The following is a partial list of issues currently receiving special research attention: American growth management policy (and its impact on local growth); transportation policy including the development of smart highways, and the environmental justice impacts of highways development; the provision of housing for low and moderate income Americans; improving the mobility of the poor; the cost to taxpayers of economic development policy and the effect of that policy on local economic growth; GIS and 3-Dimensional visualizations of land development; and the interaction among planners, politicians and the populace. We have created a dedicated alumni site - it includes a list of alumni e-mail addresses, a threaded discussion forum (we encourage posts of recent job openings) and an extensive set of links to current job opportunities.

Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning
THE FIELD
Planners understand how communities are structured, what their needs are, and how they are governed. Often negotiating between conflicting needs, planners develop land-use plans for growth and revitalization of regional, urban, suburban, and rural communities. They often advise decision-making related to social, economic, cultural, land-development, transportation, resource-development, environmental, heritage, and other issues. Many planners today work in the private sector, in real estate development, planning law practice, consulting, and the locational management of retail and service firms. THE PROGRAM
The Urban and Regional Planning program is in the business of educating planning professionals adept at community-building. Our graduates figure prominently among Canadian planners, who enjoy a strong international reputation. Fast-track Options
Both programs enable career advancement in the field of planning in Ontario and Canada by providing the requisite degree credentials for advancement to professional membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Ontario Professional Planners Institute. The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning degree will also qualify graduates of these fast-track programs for eventual registration in Ontario as Registered Professional Planners.

The goal of city and regional planning is to further the welfare of people and their communities by creating convenient, equitable, healthful, efficient, and attractive environments for present and future generations. Planning is city building. Through the analytical planning process, planners consider the physical, social and economic aspects of communities and examine the connections between them. Professionally trained planners also analyze the existing conditions and future trends in the area. They analyze issues such as transportation, land use, housing, recreation and open space, natural and cultural resources, community services, population, and economic development. In addition to generating their own data, planners draw upon the work of others to create a comprehensive overview of the community. Once planners have conducted their analysis, they develop strategic alternatives for solving problems in a coordinated and comprehensive manner. These alternatives will guide future development based on the established goals and the systematic analysis. The Plan consists of these alternatives presented in a formal document. Plans can take several shapes, from comprehensive plans to historic preservation plans. Plans are presented to community officials, who review, revise and adopt them for action. Plans are required at different levels of government. Once the plan is adopted, the planners job becomes the implementation of the plan, coordinating work among many groups. The tools of planning implementation include such things as land use controls and economic develop strategies.
