The Program encourages theoretically focused empirical investigations aimed at improving the explanation of fundamental social processes. Included is research on organizations and organizational behavior, population dynamics, social movements, social groups, labor force participation, stratification and mobility, family, social networks, socialization, gender roles, and the sociology of science and technology. In assessing the intrinsic merit of a proposed piece of research, four components are key to securing support from the Sociology Program: (1) The issues investigated must be theoretically grounded. (2) The research should be based on empirical observation or be subject to empirical validation. (3) The research design must be appropriate to the questions asked. (4) The proposed research must advance our understanding of social processes or social structures.

Royer Largely known as the author of James and the Giant Peach (1961) and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), Roald Dahl is also the author of three full-length works for early adolescents. It is of this group of young people that Dahl once said, " 'If my books can help children become readers, then I feel I have accomplished something important' " ( West ). Dahl's books for adolescents have caught the attention of young people and adults alike. The view of society revealed through his bookshis implied criticism of adults and his contempt for social institutionshas made his works popular with adolescents. This same view has brought mixed reactions from critics. The variety of audiences that Dahl successfully wrote for throughout his career demonstrates his ability to appeal to specific groups of readers. Ironically, Roald Dahl wrote extensively for adults and children before he attempted to write books for young adults. His writing career began when Cecil Scott Forester interviewed him for the Saturday Evening Post and submitted Dahl's fictionalized account of his adventures in the Royal Air Force to the newspaper ( Pendergast ). In 1943, Dahl wrote his first children's story, The Gremlins, for Walt Disney, who wanted to make it into a film. Although it was never produced, Disney later published the story, complete with Disney's illustrations (

Southern Rural Sociology The Journal of the Southern Rural Sociological Society Statement of Purpose Southern Rural Sociology is the official journal of the Southern Rural Sociological Association. The SRSA is a section of the Southern Association of Agricultural Scientists, an organization of researchers and Extension staff in 1862 and 1890 land grant colleges and universities in the South. The SRSA is not, however, limited in its membership to people who work at land grant institutions. Membership of the SRSA is drawn from a range of social science interests and disciplines, as well as from the ranks of those involved in the promoting social change. As an academic refereed journal, Southern Rural Sociology was established in 1983 to stimulate research on a wide range of rural issues that relate to the South. Areas of interest include rural economic restructuring, rural development, rural households in transition, the sociology of community, health, and poverty, rural labor market participation, agricultural restructuring, natural resource and environmental issues, agricultural and natural resource commodity systems, globalization of the agro-food system, race, gender, and class inequality.
