The Application of Computer Content Analysis in Sexology:
A Case Study of Primary Process Content in Fictional Fetishistic Narratives
Andrew Wilson, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This paper illustrates an application of computer content analysis in sexology. It compares a set of fictional fetishistic narratives published on a web site for rubber boot fetishists (n = 27) with a set of samples taken from general romance and love stories (n = 29). Using Martindale's Regressive Imagery Dictionary, it is shown that the fetishistic narratives contain a significantly higher proportion of primary process content and a significantly lower proportion of secondary process content than the romance and love stories. The subcategory of Icarian imagery is the main contributor to this effect. These findings appear to support previous theoretical views of fetishism as a regressive state and a "destruction of reality". Further content analysis studies of a wider range of fetishes may facilitate a typological categorization of fetishism.

Prof. Walling - see his portrait, below - uses language we seldom hear today outside of a Protestant church, reflecting his era's ties to a formal, romantic and, of course, Victorian century. It's oratory, written for speeches.

Tuesday, January 16, 2001 U professor receives award for achievements in sexology Melinda Rogers Staff Reporter Many researchers work tirelessly throughout their careers, hoping to be recognized for an important contribution to their field of study. While few ever receive the honors they dream of, one University professor recently received an award that exceeded even his own expectations of success. Dr. Eli Coleman, University professor and world-renowned expert in issues of human sexuality, was awarded the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award for outstanding contributions to the field of sexology Nov. 12 in Orlando, Fla. Coleman has been working in the field of sexology for more than 20 years and is one of the most highly regarded experts on issues of sexual orientation, gender dysphoria, chemical dependency, compulsive sexual behavior and sexual offenders. "I was in disbelief (to receive the award). Just to be in the company of the kind of people that have received this award before ... I was stunned," Coleman said.

Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation Marketing the Menacing Fetus in Japan Masculinity and Male Codes of Honor in Modern France
DESCRIPTION (back to top) A sweeping study of sex, power, and knowledge in modern Japan, this ambitious work provides the first full-scale, detailed history of the formation and application of a science of sex from Meiji through mid-twentieth century Japan. Tracing the different uses made of sexual knowledge, the book brings to light the complex and subtle interplay between sexuality, scientific expertise, social control, and empire building. Colonizing Sex we see how these struggles were driven by rhetoric consisting of cries for defense, liberation, and truthemphasizing in every historical moment how the sexual body has been, and is, part of much broader currents in political, cultural, and social life. Bland, Lucy and Laura Doan, editors Sexology in Culture Labelling Bodies and Desires . x, 236 p. 1998 Cloth NSA $40.00tx 0-226-05665-1 Fall 1998
Paper NSA $18.00tx 0-226-05667-8 Fall 1998 The key founders of sexology, the "science of desire," were Havelock Ellis, Richard von Krafft-Ebing, and Magnus Hirschfeld. This volume examines the impact of their writings on English-speaking culture from the 1880s to the early 1940s. How influential a field was sexology during this period, and how much power did sexologists wield? What was the impact of their work on popular and official attitudes to sex? Lucy Bland and Laura Doan have brought together leading historians of sex, cultural and literary critics, and scholars in gay, lesbian, and queer studies, to reassess current debates on sexology in light of its history. They address issues such as the relation of "sexual science" to the law, government policy, journalism, eugenics programs, marriage and sex manuals, and literary representation. They also map out new readings of transsexuality and bisexuality, and the centrality of race within sexology. Sexology in Culture and its companion Sexology Uncensored will interest all those concerned with understanding modern sexual discourse in its historical context.
