Science studies
In academics, science studies is an umbrella term encompassing the disciplines known separately as history of science , sociology of science, philosophy of science and more rarely the Logic and methodology of science. Science studies scholars also include anthropologists. The success of science at generating useful and reliable understandings about the world has attracted curiosity from diverse perspectives, including curiosities oriented toward culture, politics and epistemology . An overarching goal that applies to many science studies research projects is to learn how scientific understanding progresses. Technology studies deal with human products whose utility is a matter of whether or not they "work" in effecting transformations of the material world. Sciece studies deal with knowledge claims, but these are often interpreted as claims to truth; many students of science studies have preferred to skate around the question of veracity (and some treat all scientific approaches as being in effect of equal truth value), and say that science "works" to the extent that relevant communities believe in its claims.

Indoor Mold, Dampness Are Linked to Respiratory Problems
May 25 Scientific evidence links mold and other factors related to damp conditions in homes and other buildings to asthma symptoms in some asthmatics as well as to coughing, wheezing and other upper respiratory tract symptoms in otherwise healthy people, says a new Institute of Medicine report. The available evidence does not support an association between either interior dampness or mold and the wide range of other health complaints that have been ascribed to them, but the possibility of a link cannot be ruled out.
MMR Vaccine and Thimerosal-Containing Vaccines Are Not Associated With Autism
May 18 Based on a thorough review of clinical and epidemiological studies, neither the mercury-based vaccine preservative thimerosal nor the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine are associated with autism, says a new Institute of Medicine report. Hypotheses regarding how the MMR vaccine and thimerosal could trigger autism lack supporting evidence and are theoretical only. Further research to find the cause of autism should be directed toward other lines of inquiry that are supported by current knowledge and evidence and offer more promise for providing an answer.

I became interested in science studies after I wrote Myths of Gender . Originally I had formulated my questions around the hunt for racism or sexism in science. But I encountered so many instances of good scientists doing what some would call "bad science" about race and gender that I began to wonder if there wasn't something more generic about the production of scientific knowledge that I needed to understand. Thus began my search to understand more broadly, how cultural settingtime and placebecome part of the production of scientific knowledge. This led to my second book Sexing the Body For those who would like a broad introduction into the field of science studies I recommend the following books and web sites:
