    Our Program
Majoring in religious studies provides an opportunity to explore and analyze the great written and oral traditions of the world's religions:
    • Hinduism Buddhism Judaism Christianity Islam Contemporary groups in the U.S. African religions.
    The Program
The major introduces students to the academic study of religion. The religious studies major offers a broad choice of courses, including:history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, American studies, classics, and medieval studies. For some students, religious studies is an appropriate second major and might combine well with anything from philosophy to international agricultural development, from history to international relations. Religious studies also has four options for minor programs: religious studies, Asian religions, Judaism, and Christian studies. Career Alternatives
The emphasis in religious studies courses on developing analytical thinking skills and clear written expression is an asset for many career goals. As a strong liberal arts program, the major can lead to research and/or teaching on all levels, as well as careers in related areas such as the ministry, counseling, social work, and other helping professions. Because the major integrates so many academic areas, it is also an excellent background for graduate programs, especially in the humanities, and for professional schools including law, business, and foreign service. Three major disciplines in one Department The Department of Religious Studies, Classics and Philosophy represents the union in 1983 of two original departments of the old University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, namely Divinity and Classics. Three major disciplines, each with its own identity and content, complement one another and provide unique opportunities for inter-disciplinary and cross-cultural studies. The Department is the largest in the faculty of Arts. It provides a full range of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes as well as a Diploma in Religious Studies through its Associate and Affiliate Colleges. Religious Studies is concerned with religion as a phenomenon, the sociology, psychology and philosophy of religion. Although it looks at all the major religions of the world, it concentrates on the three main religions in Zimbabwe, i.e. African Traditional Religion, Christianity and Islam. Within the compass of Christianity come Biblical Studies (both Old and New Testament), Christian History and Thought, Christian Theology and African Theology. Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Greek form part of the Religious Studies programme.

Welcome to the Department of religious studies. The study of Religion deals with the deepest and most basic questions of human existence
    http://www.mta.ca/faculty/humanities/religious/
Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies The study of Religion deals with the deepest and most basic questions of human existence: the meaning and purpose of life, relations with a divine presence and power, interpersonal relations and ultimate human destiny. A programme of religious studies at the university level will seek to examine the various religious traditions, taking a historical and critical approach and utilizing the insights and advances of modern scholarship. It will be concerned with the Judaeo-Christian tradition, but also with all the major world faiths; with the origins and history of religious traditions, but also with the live issues and contemporary concerns of religion today. The study of religion is not confined to those preparing for theological studies: it has a valid and vital place in a liberal arts programme. Such a programme does not exist to advocate one faith rather than another, and least of all to proselytize on behalf of one denomination. It is designed to encourage students to study a most important aspect of human existence, and it may help them to focus and clarify their own thinking on these matters.

    133. Religion Major - Religious Studies - World History, Art, Classics, Philosophy, S
Women's liberal arts college in Virginia. Undergraduate religious studies program.
    http://www.hollins.edu/undergrad/religion/religion.htm
Undergraduate Programs The religious studies major allows students to engage religious issues with other disciplines (art, classics, English, history, philosophy, and sociology). The shape of the major offers critical understandings of religion as community and individual enterprise, especially as religion relates to other human endeavors in the allied fields. Its focus is in the world's major religions, their rituals, beliefs, texts, and ethical systems, as well as the various cultural contexts that shape, and are in turn shaped by, religious communities and beliefs. The major's capstone involves an interdisciplinary seminar with other majors, applying religious studies methodologies to our most basic understanding of cultures, commitments, and behaviors.
The religious studies major, with concentration in either art, classics, English, history, philosophy or sociology, provides excellent training in cultural literacy. It offers broad background for graduate school in religious studies, ministerial studies, international studies, or programs in the allied fields. Its broadest appeal will be to those who wish to engage and integrate several different fields of study, and to understand religious community and spirituality in their incarnations across many disciplines and cultures.
    Learning Beyond the Classroom
Students often spend the January Short Term in internships that expand on what they learn in the classroom. Religion major Ane Johnson '98 credits Chaplain Jan Fuller Carruthers with setting up her junior year internship with Amnesty International in Washington, D.C. "I learned about teamwork and working in an office while working closely with people who suffered abuses administered by their own countries," Ane says. "The internship not only helped me make some great contacts, it also gave me a sociological, personal, and historical perspective on which I could base my studies of religion."
