The Department of Religious Studies sees itself as a community of scholars serving the University community and the local community by teaching, research, criticism, and action. The main concern of the department is the understanding and elucidation of the Judaeo-Christian religious experience as it is exemplified in the Roman Catholic tradition. This implies not only a deep investigation of the Roman Catholic position but also a dialogue with other Christian denominations and with other world religions. Through its participation in the Sanders Judaic Studies Program, the department offers special courses in this area. It also engages in interdisciplinary studies. Did you know that the

T he Religious Studies major has been offered at Alma College for over 100 years. Students who have completed its requirements have gone on to careers in ministry, Christian education, social work, counseling, communication, teaching, business, and law. Many of our graduates have continued their studies in graduate schools or seminaries. In recent years, a number of students have chosen to make Religious Studies their second major or minor to accompany and complement other majors. We welcome these double majors and believe they achieve an even better liberal arts education by joining other areas of study with Religious Studies. R eligious Studies examines the way a person or community makes sense out of life (world views) and the way a pers on or community acts out and lives in a world view (life styles). The study of religion includes
exploration of the nature and meaning of the religious dimensions of human experience;

The Religious Studies department focuses on the role which religion has played and continues to play in the life of the individual and society. Religion addresses itself to fundamental questions relating to the meaning of human existence. Religious answers to these questions reflect the encounter between human beings and the transcendent. The courses which the department offers examine the relationship among religion, the individual, and society, recognizing that the answers provided by religions are both shaped by and shape the society of which they are a part.
If you like this photo taken by a former professor in our Departmant, click here for more photos by him. The department offers a wide range of courses dealing with both Western and Eastern religious traditions and cultures. Contemporary life issues are also examined in various courses in connection with religions and students are encouraged to become familiar with the primary texts (in translation) of various religions.
The department's courses are intended for a broad range of undergraduate students who may complete a major, advanced major, or honours in religious studies. Students in other disciplines can expect their appreciation of these disciplines to be enriched through a study of religion. Courses will be of interest both to students who are associated with a particular religious tradition as well as to students who have no formal religious affiliation.
