Department of Philosophy,
Courses in philosophy and theology/religious studies are central to the general education objectives at Marymount. The curriculum includes introductory and advanced courses in logic, ethics, the history of philosophy, systematic and moral theology, scripture studies, and Church history. The major in philosophy aims to develop a critical and articulated understanding of basic beliefs and value judgments. Students become acquainted with the intellectual foundations of Western culture and learn to analyze problems through a variety of methods. Beginning students are expected to complete a course in logic, a two-semester course in the history of philosophy, and an introductory course in ethics by the end of their second year. The achievement of senior students is measured through a comprehensive examination and the requirements of the senior seminar. The major in theology aims to develop a critical understanding of basic religious beliefs and revealed truths. The approach is critical and analytic and aims to acquaint students with the principal foundations of Christian theology, and to provide opportunities to compare tenets among the major world religions. First and second year students are expected to complete a semester course in the history of philosophy or philosophical ethics, a two-semester course in scripture studies, and an introductory systematic theology course. Seniors complete a senior seminar and a comprehensive examination.

86. What Is Religious Studies?
What Is religious studies? Put most simply, religious studies is the academic study of religion. It might help to say what religious studies is not.
http://www.asu.edu/clas/religious_studies/home/whatrel.html
What Is Religious Studies?
Put most simply, religious studies is the academic study of religion. Unless you have taken a religious studies course, however, this might not mean too much to you. It might help to say what religious studies is not. It is not "Sunday school" at the college level or a professional program that trains people for the ministry. It is not the confession of religion, but the study about religion. Religious studies is not an intrinsically religious activity. You don't have to be religious to study religion. Then, again, you certainly can be religious, and study your own religion, or other religious traditions, from an academic perspective. Religious studies does not study religion from the perspective of a single discipline, such as the historical, literary, or philosophical. It brings together perspectives and approaches from history, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and literature to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the individuals and traditions that constitute religions and cultures. Because religions and the religious deal with questions of meaning and orientation, religious studies provides a place for students to explore in a disciplined fashion the ways in which humans have struggled to make sense of themselves and their world. To study religion is to study responses, both behavioral and intellectual, to some of the great riddles and questions that face human beings, including death, suffering, tragedy, and the nature of the self and the universe.

-Maggie Nichols, Rockhurst graduate No matter what career you choose, the Theology and Religious Studies Department at Rockhurst University will give you an edge most colleges and universities cannot provide. Understanding the underpinnings of our world makes a world of difference to your success in life. What exactly will I learn in Theology and Religious Studies? The Department of Theology and Religious Studies has the same mission as other departments scholarly understanding. In fact, it's not what you may expect. There's no religious indoctrination or dogma-rather, lively academic study and discussion of Christianity and other religious phenomena. Whether students approach the data with or without a specific religious commitment is a matter of personal preference. After all, this is an academic excursion. In Rockhurst's theology and religious studies classes you'll gain a solid understanding of the foundation and historical developments of Christianity as well as learn a variety of beliefs, literatures, theologies and histories concerning Christianity. In addition, in your core courses, you'll participate in animated discussions on issues such as sexuality, gender, liberation and other historic and present issues. All occur within an environment in which you have the freedom to doubt and think critically. This exposure to the underlying reasons for our very existence provide powerful insights that are helpful in any career, particularly education, collegiate research, healthcare and ethics.

Events
The study of religion affords an opportunity to develop skills in understanding and interpreting the expressions of human beings. It challenges presuppositions, stereotypes, "sacred cows" and unreflected images. It sharpens the capacity to explain the significant role religion plays in politics, historical and social processes and in the arts. It can build bridges between alternative world views and separate fact from fiction, history from myth, and truth from perception. The department's greatest strengths are in Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism (particularly in Europe, North America and East Asia). We offer programs leading to the B.A. , the M.A. and the Ph.D.
