UW Oshkosh Religious Studies explores the crucial role that religion plays in the lives of individuals and communities. A central objective of Religious Studies courses at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is to help students examine human meaning systems in all their complexity and better understand how different religions influence human behavior and shape culture. A second objective of Religious Studies is to help students think critically about ultimate questions such as, What is real and true? and, How ought we to live? Such questioning naturally follows as students explore the diverse ways that people conceive of reality and of human moral obligations. In addition to helping students intelligently explore questions of meaning and understand the role of religion in the world, Religious Studies has a third objective, promoting a democratic respect for religious difference. About Religious Studies Religion is central to all aspects of human life. The Department of Religious Studies offers a wide range of courses to help students explore religion in its many aspects in societies around the world; become familiar with the diversity of religious expressions; and develop the conceptual tools necessary for understanding how religion shapes the thoughts, lives, and values of its practitioners. The Department encourages students to draw upon a variety of fields and disciplines for their study of religion, including African-American studies, anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, literary criticism, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. This interdisciplinary and multicultural character makes religious studies at Vanderbilt an excellent field for a general liberal arts education.
Students are given considerable freedom to shape their 30- hour major or 18-hour minor in religious studies around their own interests. Students are simply required to select courses that: (I) introduce them to the range of ways in which religions are studied and understood; and (II) familiarize them with at least two major world religious traditions. In the process, students learn to understand and appreciate more deeply the role religion plays in contemporary society. A major in religious studies, besides the personal growth it affords, lays a solid foundation on which to build a career in professions that demand critical thinking and conceptual flexibility in interacting with diverse populations. The minor in religious studies and the minor in Jewish studies, though narrower in scope, have the same goals.

Department of Theology and Religious Studies
Chapel of Mary and Joseph Wheeling Jesuit University Chair:
Dr. Michael F. Steltenkamp , S.J. Theology and Religious Studies are academic disciplines, essential branches of knowledge in a liberal education. A major course of study in Theology and Religious Studies provides an opportunity to explore your own religious commitments in particular and the relationship between faith and reason or religion and culture in general. A Catholic university provides an excellent context in which this may take place, for because it includes within it all methods of inquiry it is, in Cardinal Newman’s words, “able to confute and put right those who would set knowledge against itself, and would make truth contradict truth, and would persuade the world that, to be religious you must be ignorant, and to be intellectual you must be unbelieving.” The Theology and Religious Studies major requires relatively few credits. This allows for maximum flexibility and breadth of scope. Its inquiry into relationships between religion and culture requires that Theology and Religious Studies be interdisciplinary. Courses in science, literature, history and social science support the goals of our major.

Religious Studies Course Descriptions Philosophy is the process of thinking rationally and critically about the most basic and important questions of life: what gives life meaning, what is ultimately real, what is the character of value or ethics, how do I distinguish knowledge from the varying opinions of what people claim to be true, what constitutes sound reasoning? Religious Studies utilizes the insights and methods of such diverse fields as literary criticism, linguistics, iconography, anthropology, psychology, sociology, and history in order to analyze and explore the essential character of the religious dimension of life, especially the various ways in which religious experience has been or is understood and expressed in the world. Why Study Religion?
The world's religions provide order and meaning as well as the capacity to challenge and transform individuals and societies. Religious Studies majors explore the religious dimensions of life and culture through the study of myth, symbol, ritual and doctrine. An exploration of the distribution of justice and fairness is also emphasized through community-based service learning and the study of ethical issues in the medical and professional world.
