Graduate Study University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the first state university to open its doors, enrolling its first student in January, 1795. Two centuries later, having achieved an international reputation for academic excellence, the University enters a new era, drawing strength from its past as it looks to the future. Innovative, transdisciplinary teaching and research, advanced communications technology, and aggressive recruitment of the best students and faculty make Carolina an exciting, challenging place. Guided by an ambitious master plan, facilities are being dramatically expanded while carefully preserving the campus’s natural beauty, thus ensuring that the University’s intellectual, physical, and natural environments are equally stimulating. Though not quite so old as the University, the Department is among the oldest recreation and leisure studies university curricula in the U. S. Courses on community recreation were first offered in 1921 as part of the Department of Sociology; in 1941 an independent recreation curriculum was created. Now the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, its dedication to excellence in teaching, research, and service remains as strong as it has always been. The Graduate Program The Department awards the Master of Science in Recreation Administration (MSRA) degree. Students elect one of two specializations, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Management. Through interdisciplinary study and research, students are prepared for careers as recreation and leisure service professionals in public and nonprofit settings. The Department’s particular interest in underserved populations, inclusive recreation services, and social justice is reflected throughout its curriculum.
