California Institute of Technology
Laboratory for Experimental Economics and Political Science
Welcome to the home page for Caltech's Laboratory for Experimental Economics and Political Science (EEPS). The Laboratory is devoted to the development and applications of a laboratory experimental methodology for a broad range of disciplines. Laboratory experimental research began at Caltech in 1972 with the early experiments of Professor Charles R. Plott, who is the current Director of the Laboratory. Laboratory research is focused on basic research issues, applied research issues, and the development of supporting technology. Basic science includes the principles of behavior of single and multiple market systems in relation to parametric and institutional settings; the principles of behavior in relation to voting and political institutions; and the strategic behavior of game theory. Applied research includes policy related research, the development of prototype markets, smart markets, and the actual implementation of new forms of markets. An interview with Charles Plott shows the value of experimental methods.

140. Comparative Democratization Project - Stanford University Democracy Website
Comparative Democratization Project studies emerging democracies. Site features a collection of political science syllabi on this topic, seminar papers, and a directory of Internet resources.
http://democracy.stanford.edu/
Comparative Democratization Project - Stanford University
Keywords: democracy, freedom, liberty, human rights, civil society, democratization, transition, reform, revolution, politics, political parties, elections, rule of law, justice, corruption, economy, development, military, ethnic.
Since the third wave of democratization began in 1974, more than 60 countries in Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa have made transitions from authoritarian regimes (of varying duration and repressiveness) to some form of democracy (however tentative and partial). This wave of democratization, the greatest to date in the world system, represents a sea change in international relations and comparative politics. This project attempts to overcome the traditional division between academic disciplines and area studies to understand these rapid global transformations. Sponsored by the Institute for International Studies of Stanford University, its research foci include the following:
  • Development of theories about democratization that can apply both within and across different regions.
