Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Youth Issues
(Taken from the SIECUS Report, Volume 29, Number 4 - April/May 2001) During adolescence, young people form their sexual identity. This SIECUS Fact Sheet reviews research on sexual orientation during adolescence and presents the available statistics on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students. Many of the studies are regional or local. Much of the research focuses on samples of LGBT youth that are disproportionately at risk. Sexual Self-Concept, Orientation, and Identity
  • Sexual self-concept is an individual’s evaluation of his or her sexual feelings and actions
  • Developing a sexual self-concept is a key developmental task of adolescence
  • During adolescence, young people tend to experience their first adult erotic feelings, experiment with sexual behaviors, and develop a strong sense of their own gender identity and sexual orientation
  • Gender identification includes understanding that a person is male or female as well as understanding the roles, values, duties, and responsibilities of being a man or a woman
Sexual Orientation during Adolescence These statistics are from a report written by the Safe Schools Coalition of Washington that describes several other studies:
  • In Seattle, of 8,406 respondents in the ninth to twelfth grades, 4.5 percent of respondents described themselves as gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB). Ninety-one percent described themselves as heterosexual. Another four percent indicated that they were “not sure” of their orientations.

Potential 2004 Democratic Vice Presidential Running Mates on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues - May 7, 2004
By Alain Dang
With John Kerry the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, much attention has turned to speculation about who he will pick to be his Vice Presidential running mate. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute analyzed the positions of prospective candidates on a number of issues of importance to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. We looked at their voting records, public statements, and policy platforms to determine their positions. Download the full report and the one-page grid which summarizes the potential running mates positions.

Assessing the Status of Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Students on Campus
There is still very little research documenting the experiences of lesbian, gay, and bisexual students on college campuses today. A new book, Toward Acceptance: Sexual Orientation Issues on Campus , begins to address this lack of evidence. It offers overviews of current research and models for what new assessments might be done. Authors in Toward Acceptance critically review the existing empirical literature on this topic, summarize the findings of the current data-based research, and examine such topics as religiously affiliated institutions and sexual orientation, classroom issues for lesbian, gay, and bisexual students, the role of ethnicity within the population, and strategies for becoming allies to these students. Articles in the book also provide recommendations for future study of these populations. Noting the dearth of published studies regarding lesbian, gay, and bisexual college students, the authors find that three themes dominate the current literature: the identity development process, experiences on campus, and health issues. Current Research Current studies suggest that lesbian, gay, and bisexual students experience high rates of discrimination and harrassment on campus; that classroom environment has an impact on students' coming-out experiences; and that developing an individual sexual identity is often linked to becoming politically active in support of gender and sexuality issues.

Home Resources Self-Help GLBT Suicide Suicide is almost always a desperate act by someone who feels helpless and hopeless. Suicidal feelings and thoughts are a frequent symptom of depression. As a society, we feel shocked and questioning when someone we know kills herself or himself. We feel that we want to do whatever we can to prevent another such tragedy.
It has been only in the last decade that there has been recognition that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth (generally defined as ages 15-24) are at an increased risk of suicide compared to other youth. A growing body of research literature has provided the estimate that gays, lesbians, and bisexual youth attempt suicide at a rate 2-3 times higher than their heterosexual peers. Some studies indicate that the rate of attempted suicide for transgender youth is higher than 50%. These studies are not documenting only a recent phenomenon; some are retrospective studies, interviewing older members of these minority groups and finding high rates for attempted suicide during these individuals' youth decades ago. It is only the attention to this problem that is recent.
There are several things that can help reduce the suicide risk factors for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth. All of us can make a commitment to making the environment a safer place for them. Heterosexuals who read this can do a lot. Stop laughing at or ignoring the bigoted jokes and insults that are frequently made about sexual and gender minorities. Go a step further and confront those who make these remarks, telling them that you do not find them appropriate. Additionally, you can continue your own education about all sorts of people who are different than you, including sexual and gender minorities. Open your mind and your heart further. Communicate your caring to those around you. Support the struggles of this population to obtain the same basic civil rights you have, the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Psychological Perspectives on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Experiences Second Edition
Edited by Linda Garnets and Douglas Kimmel "In this new edition, Garnets and Kimmel do more than simply update their materials. They assist in the development of new paradigms for the understanding of lesbian, gay, and bisexual experiences by expanding the purview of the field. This book both reflects and grows out of their impeccable scholarship and breadth of vision." "A rich and satisfying set of psychological studies; surely sets a standard for the field that is a classic in the making." "This book is the most comprehensive work on lesbian and gay issues to date, and will be a classic in the field." Designed for both the undergraduate and graduate classroom, this selection of important articles provides a comprehensive overview of current thought about the psychological issues affecting lesbians, bisexuals, and gay men. The editors have revised and updated the introduction and included a new set of articles for the second edition, most of which have been published since the release of the first edition of Psychological Perspectives . The book is divided into eight sections that deal with the meaning of sexual orientation; the psychological dimensions of prejudice, discrimination, and violence; identity development; diversity; relationships and families; adolescence, midlife, and aging; mental health; and the status of practice, research, and public policy bearing on homosexuality and bisexuality in American psychology.
