3. UCLA Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Studies: Background
Women’s Studies Program has sponsored courses with lesbian and gay content, among them the Introduction to lesbian, gay, and bisexual studies, first taught
http://www.humnet.ucla.edu/humnet/lgbts/background.html
BACKGROUND INFORMATION The History of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies at UCLA UCLA has sponsored research in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies for nearly fifty years, longer than almost any other university in the United States. It enjoys this distinction thanks to the work of Evelyn Hooker , a research psychologist at UCLA, who was urged by a former student and other gay men she knew to study homosexuals who lead relatively well-adjusted lives. Her research, which she began presenting publicly in 1954, showed that there is no detectable difference in the psychological health of homosexual and heterosexual men. As one of the very first academics to challenge the belief that homosexuals are in some way flawed, Hooker assured UCLA a place of honor among U.S. universities in the struggle to combat prejudice with creditable research. Not until 1976 was the first course in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies taught at UCLA. It was devoted to "Gay and Lesbian Literature" and was taught by Peter Thorslev, professor of English. More recently, the Women’s Studies Program has sponsored courses with lesbian and gay content, among them the "Introduction to Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Studies," first taught in 1992 by Daniel Calder, professor of English and Linda Garnets, lecturer in psychology and women’s studies. Over the years other departments too have offered a steadily increasing number of related courses.

    http://ase.tufts.edu/ttlgbc/lgbtaskforce/recommendations.html
RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE REPORT OF TASK FORCE ON LESBIAN, GAY, AND BISEXUAL ISSUES
The following recommendations are taken from the Report of the Task Force on Lesbian, gay, and Bisexual Issues dated May 20, 1993.
The President, Provost, and Vice President for Arts, Sciences and Technology should make a public statement of their commitment to achieving the goals of this report. This report should be disseminated throughout the Tufts community, including to the Trustees.
Based upon the work of the Task Force, these goals can be achieved through the implementation of the following recommendations:
  • A single anti-discrimination policy should be developed for all units of the University as soon as possible. The President, Provost, and Vice President for Arts, Sciences, and Technology should systematically inform and educate the community about this policy, the venues for redress of discrimination and harassment, and the generic forms of disciplinary action expected.
  • Education dealing with human sexual diversity and university policy should be provided to all staff, faculty, and students. In addition to orientation programs for new faculty, students, and staff, the University should provide on-going support for its members in handling issues of sexual-identity diversity.
  • Employment opportunities should explicitly invite lesbians, gay men, and bisexual people to apply for faculty and staff positions. In order to reach the largest possible audience, hiring and recruitment should be advertised in national and regional gay media and newsletters of appropriate professional caucuses in addition to mainstream publications.1

    The Curriculum
Current Courses with Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Content
In September, 1995, this Committee distributed a survey to all University faculty and instructional staff, seeking information about lesbian, gay, and bisexual scholarship and teaching. Specifically, the survey inquired about:
    • courses dealing primarily or partially with LGB topics references to LGB issues in lectures or discussions research about LGB issues and concerns
Two hundred and eighty completed surveys were returned and analyzed; the results demonstrated that more than 100 courses then taught at UW-Madison contained lesbian, gay, and bisexual content. The curriculum does not currently include an introductory course in LGB studies. There is no regular course in LGB theory. A list of the courses reported in the 1995 survey as verified and augmented in 1996 is included as an attachment to this report.
Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Courses and Programs in other Colleges and Universities
The Committee has gathered information about lesbian, gay, and bisexual courses, curricula, and programs at other institutions of higher education. In January, 1997, the Committee made direct contact with representatives of each of the institutions listed below to validate the information provided in a variety of lists maintained on world wide web sites. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee established a certificate program in gay and lesbian studies in 1994, based on the recommendations of an ad hoc study committee and their Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Faculty/Staff Caucus. Having surveyed department chairs about lesbian, gay, and bisexual issues in courses in 1993, the Caucus compiled a list of about 35 existing courses that formed the core of the subsequent certificate program. Their program requires 18 credits, with a minimum grade point average of 2.5. All students must complete an introductory course (three credit hours) plus 9 credits in courses that focus primarily on gay and lesbian issues and 6 credits in courses that "include a substantial amount of material about gay and lesbian issues." No more than 9 credits from any single department can apply to the requirements for the certificate. These requirements are quite similar to those established for LGB certificate programs in other institutions.

    Program Scope
Gay, lesbian, and bisexual studies intends to delineate and analyze meanings that have been associated with homosexuality in various artistic, biological, cultural, educational, ethical, historical, and literary contexts; and examine the related issues of mixed-gender and cross-gender roles and practices. The minor is broadly interdisciplinary. It draws courses from anthropology, biology, cinema, counseling, English, history, human sexuality studies, psychology, NEXA, social sciences, speech and communication studies, and women studies. The university also offers a Minor in Human Sexuality Studies
MINOR IN GAY, LESBIAN, AND BISEXUAL STUDIES
The minor consists of a minimum of 24 units of undergraduate study. It is possible to use these courses to meet requirements in some undergraduate majors, in other minors, and various clusters in the General Education program. Specifically, several courses meet the requirements of the Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Perspectives cluster in Segment III of the General Education program.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies Program at UCLA is an interdisciplinary program that supports teaching and research on the historical and contemporary experience of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people. It provides an academic home for those who wish to study the intellectual and cultural traditions that have shaped our current understanding of sexuality and gender, as well as for those who wish to challenge such traditions and generate new theoretical paradigms. The program sponsors courses, offers an undergraduate minor, organizes lecture series, facilitates the study of minority sexualities and genders in the broadest interdisciplinary context, and tries to bring together interested students, faculty, and members of the larger Los Angeles community.
