Some of my essays...
An international language - the need, the candidates and the prospects . If you thought English is, and always will be the international language, read on ... Lojban - a logical language . An introduction to Lojban, a constructed language designed for maximum clarity, expressiveness and cultural neutrality. Who is a native speaker and what is it they speak? Less an entry into the TEFL "native speaker" debate, more a philosophical and sociolinguistic look at the concept itself, looking at the terms "language", "dialect", "speech community" and, of course, "native". Future Forms in English. A look at "will" and the futurates. Three and a half views of the language faculty. A look at Chomsky, Bickerton and Lakoff, with a few ideas of my own thrown in. Register in Academic Writing . This is where I get Hallidayan for a change: an analysis of two different academic genres, with some comments about the teaching of academic writing (this is the paper I would have given at the Reading conference on writing if I'd been able to afford the air fare!). I appreciate feedback - if you've read any of these essays, please sign my

The Linguist List web site

The most comprehensive listing of sources of linguistic information, with a lot of their own content. Especially recommended for finding out about The Linguist List, the main world wide linguistics mailing list. (The WWW Virtual Library: Linguistics page is now no more than another way of seeing the same page of links as on the Linguist List page although it may load a bit quicker.)
Linguistics Indexes on the Internet from SIL.

A nicely laid out site, which is especially good on linguistics journals with web sites. Now being updated again. It also links to Linguistics Abstracts On-line , a search interface to linguistics journal articles, edited by Terry Langendoen, which you now have to pay for.

Now in a sexy new edition, but with commercial sponsorship. Best listing of resources on individual languages. Weaker on linguistics, but expanding.

The Greek Alphabet
Provided by the Greek Language and Linguistics Gateway
The alphabet presented below on this page is the one used for printed Ancient Greek texts. The earliest Greek texts that have survived were written with a radically different script called Linear B For a detailed and wonderfully well argued discussion of the origins of the Greek alphabet, see Roger D. Woodard's book, Greek Writing from Knossos to Homer . Click on the image to the right to see the current price. Two sets of pronunciation suggestions are given below: first the pronunciation of each letter in Modern Greek , then the reconstructed pronunciation for the Classical period (before about 350 BCE). The artificial Erasmian pronunciation used in many schools to teach Biblical Greek and sometimes even Classical Greek is not given on this page. To hear examples of that traditional pronunciation and see excellent examples of how to write the Greek letters, you can visit the writing portion of the tutoring page for the Appalachian College Association's Biblical Greek Lab. While neither the pronunciation suggestions given here nor the Erasmian system acurately reflects the pronunciation of Greek in the Hellenistic period of the New Testament and early Christianity, a reconstructed pronunciation system for that period will be added later.

Description English Language and Linguistics , published twice a year, is an international journal which focuses on the description of the English language within the framework of contemporary linguistics. The journal is concerned equally with the synchronic and the diachronic aspects of English language studies and publishes articles of the highest quality which make a substantial contribution to our understanding of the structure and development of the English language and which are informed by a knowledge and appreciation of linguistic theory. English Language and Linguistics carries articles and short discussion papers or squibs on all core aspects of English, from its beginnings to the present day, including syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics, pragmatics, corpus linguistics and lexis. There is also a major review section including, from time to time, articles that give an overview of current research in particular specialist areas.
