    KMWorld's 100 Companies that Matter
    in Knowledge Management 2004
    By Hugh McKellar
KMWorld editor in chief The Faces of Knowledge Management ith the drumbeat of consolidation growing ever louder since we first put this list together in 2000, you¹d think identifying a hundred companies that matter in knowledge management would be increasingly easier to assemble, right? Heck, it simply follows that with fewer companies to choose from, it would be simpler to pick 100, right? Not at all. As you¹ll see in our Spring Buyers¹ Guide, our knowledge management community consists of more than 1,500 companies, whose offerings range from forms processing to social networking, content management to collaboration, imaging to, well, you name it. And, no, we¹re not trying to be everything for everybody, but we are firmly committed to knowledge management as an attitude, not an application. So, those of us who put the list togetherKM practitioners, theorists, vendors, their customers, analysts and editorshad a hell of a time agreeing on the companies we selected. Just as we did last year, we ³cheated² a little by adding a separate categoryconsultants and analysts (and, this year, integrators). Obviously, it¹s impossible to know precisely what each of the 1,500 companies has doneor thought about doingin the past year. So, each of us had to bring to our brainstorming sessions information about those firms that, for one reason or another, had the most compelling story to tellor at least made the effort to tell its story to us. Surely, we made mistakes.

For an expanded overview of this topic, read the KM Executive Summary What is knowledge management?
What constitutes intellectual or knowledge-based assets?

What benefits can companies expect from KM?
    ...
    What technologies can support KM?

What is knowledge management? Unfortunately, there's no universal definition of KM, just as there's no agreement as to what constitutes knowledge in the first place. For this reason, it's best to think of KM in the broadest context. Succinctly put, KM is the process through which organizations generate value from their intellectual and knowledge-based assets. Most often, generating value from such assets involves sharing them among employees, departments and even with other companies in an effort to devise best practices. It's important to note that the definition says nothing about technology; while KM is often facilitated by IT, technology by itself is not KM. share what he knows with other caddies, then they all may eventually earn bigger tips. How would KM work to make this happen? The caddie master may decide to reward caddies for sharing their tips by offering them credits for pro shop merchandise. Once the best advice is collected, the course manager would publish the information in notebooks (or make it available on PDAs), and distribute them to all the caddies. The end result of a well-designed KM program is that everyone wins. In this case, caddies get bigger tips and deals on merchandise, golfers play better because they benefit from the collective experience of caddies, and the course owners win because better scores lead to more repeat business.

    T.D. Wilson
    Professor Emeritus

Abstract Examines critically the origins and basis of 'knowledge management', its components and its development as a field of consultancy practice. Problems in the distinction between 'knowledge' and 'information' are explored, as well as Polanyi's concept of 'tacit knowing'. The concept is examined in the journal literature, the Web sites of consultancy companies, and in the presentation of business schools. The conclusion is reached that 'knowledge management' is an umbrella term for a variety of organizational activities, none of which are concerned with the management of knowledge. Those activities that are not concerned with the management of information are concerned with the management of work practices, in the expectation that changes in such areas as communication practice will enable information sharing.
    Introduction
The growth of 'knowledge management' as a strategy of consultancy companies is one of a series of such strategies dating from Taylor's (1911) 'scientific management' of the early part of the last century. 'Time and motion study' developed directly out of scientific management and continued into the 1970s as a widespread industrial engineering technique. In the late 1930s, the 'human relations school' emerged out of research between 1927 and 1932 at the Western Electric Hawthorne Works in Chicago (

Many people are beginning to see their intranets becoming powerful knowledge management systems. However, as with the early days of any new approach, there is an intuitive acceptance of the phenomenon accompanied by much confusion around the concepts involved. Additionally, in fields like knowledge management and organizational learning, there are existing perceptions and terms that may inhibit as much as help our understanding of the new environment. This is why it is useful to start with the definitions and concepts, since these are the tools we humans use to understand and communicate. Here are some definitional concepts you might find useful in thinking about the subject. First, "Learning" is a verb. It is the process of finding (or inventing) patterns from chaos. If we start with an ordered understanding we can't learn, because we already "know" the patterns and relationships. Thus, when people complain about the "chaos" and lack of structure in a free-form intranet, think of it not as a problem, but as a fertile base of materials for organizational learning. Knowledge, on the other hand, is the repository of what we already have learned. It may be explicit, as in books or intranet content, or it may be implicit as in relationships and processes that may not be documented.
