Sherlock's Men: Masculinity, Conan Doyle and Cultural History
Ashgate Scolar Press, 1997, 260 pp., ISBN 1-85928-394-2, $72.95
Description:
Sherlock's Men explores the manner in which the Sherlock Holmes tales constructed masculinity from 1887, with the publication of A Study in Scarlet , through 1927, with the publication of The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes . As documents of popular culture, the men portrayed in these stories conveyed paradigms of masculine gender during a key transition in cultural history. Elements and issues concerning masculinity discussed in this book include: the idea of a gentleman; the role of reason; the nature of heroism; the function of regulating, policing, and investigating cultural institutions and practices; the ideology of chi valry; the consequences of imperialism for masculinity; the criminal as transgressive masculinity; the functions of law and punishment; male-female relationships; the imprinting of "games" or "sport" ideologies; the crisis of masculinity during these deca des; and the presentation of international politics in such fiction. Joseph A. Kestner is the author of

FRIEND who noticed my reading habits asked, "Why would anyone want to study theology by reading A Bunch of Dead Guys? Shouldn't you focus mostly on current works, or risk becoming an irrelevant theological fossil?" My answer: the truth about God is timeless. The last infallible book of theology was written nearly two thousand years ago. In theology, if it's new, it probably isn't true. The entrance is at the top center of the map. Watch your step, though. As you walk through The Hall of Church History, if you veer too far to the right or to the left, you'll encounter people whose tendency has been to enshrine tradition over Scripture, or to pursue what is innovative and novel at the expense of what is sure and steadfast. These dark corners of The Hall of Church history can be interesting and informative. But we encourage guests to spend most of their time in the central hall, which takes you from the Church Fathers, through the Medieval Churchmen, down a narrow, treasure-filled hallway devoted to the Puritan and Reformed writers, to the more recent stalwarts of the faith. We have named this corridor "Berean Hall," in honor of those noble recipients of the apostolic message, who "received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so" (Acts 17:11).

An historical overview of Tarot dating back to 15th century Italy.
http://www.tarotcam.com/tarothistory.html
Tarot History Meet the Psychics Readers Available NOW! What is Tarot? Tarot History Spreads ... Chinese Astrology The earliest known source of our modern Tarot deck is a series of cards from 15th century Italy. Although the Tarot probably predates this time, its true origin is unknown. Nobody can really say where or when the Tarot was created, which adds to its mystique. Sometimes outlawed and often in vogue, from its remnant in Italy, hundreds of different Tarot decks and derivation games- cards, chess, mahjong- have become internationally popular. It is equally unclear whether the Tarot originated as a card game or a method of divination. The Tarot has been used for games, but is now a universal custom through which divine guidance is sought during a consultation with the deck in a reading. During the half a millennium the Tarot has been in existence, many different spiritual traditions have been cited as sources behind its symbolic system. Since the 15th century, much has been written in an effort to analyze the mystical significance of the cards. Today, the Tarot survives as an esoteric pictorial language which fascinates a broad spectrum of humanity, yet remains inaccessible to most people. The Tarot cards are beautiful helpful tools created many centuries ago to be employed as a connection to our divine source of wisdom. the 78 cards come to mean something slightly different to everyone, but each possess certain abstract principles inherent in their own traditional design.

157. Jump Blues History
A short introduction to the history of this energetic style of blues.
http://www.stuve.com/history.htm
The Original "Blues Brothers"
Out of Swing came. . . After the Delta... And Right Now !
The Original "Blues Brothers"
Jump Blues has it's roots deeply embedded in the history of Afro-American Blues traditions. The Blue's styling and beat can be traced back as far as the 1890's, tracing its beginnings from America's deep southern rural communities. Between the 1930's and 40's the blues style was transferred from the rural population to urban dwellers, through the migration of working folk from the surrounding countryside to the cities in the Mississippi River Delta region. Once these Blues musicians learned how to "hook-up" their voices and instruments to amplifiers, through the advent of electricity, the blues sound started to take on a whole new dimension. After the Delta... Around the late 1940's things really started to sizzle. Post World War II America saw the development of new recording techniques. Radio broadcasting of live performances was the "state-of-the-art". These broadcasts were actually more popular than Records, CD's and Television Programs are today, at least as far as the music was concerned. Bebop was revolutionizing the Jazz scene in New York. Chess Records of Chicago, with Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Little Walter, Jimmy Rodgers and Willie Dixon, et al, were making blues history that is still the basic stratum today. "Swing" bands, from Kansas City to California, were "wailing" with this "new sound". They toured the country from one end to the other. Along the way they created new dance steps and rhythms, building up a huge following. Thousands of faithful fans flocked wherever they went! Maybe some of them were your parents, maybe some of them were. . . you.

In 1177 the arrived in Ireland at the invasion of that country and eventually became "more Irish than the Irish themselves". The motto of their Norman coat of arms is "Non Nobis Domine". They appear to have been Knight Templers, as the coat of arms includes knights in armour, and the cross. Their Irish crest bears 3 harps on the shield and a Lion and Cross. The motto is "Re e Merito"
