Player 1: The Primordial Ooze ... Letter to the Pharaoh
    Welcome to Videogame History 101.
While the point of this site is to cover the varied and interesting 40 year history of all those eater of dots, whether they be the pixels on the screen or the quarters in our pockets, from the invention of the very first game displayed on an oscilloscope in a nuclear laboratory to the latest megabit home console sensation, I don't expect to have EVERY base covered (at least, not yet). I've only just started to scratch the surface of videogame history, but you can follow the progress of the site in the What's New list, and I'm trying to add new elements as often as I can. The site is split up into different categories (players), each with their own sections (stages). While I think reading each section in each category in order, by using the rosetta stones, is the best way to understand videogame history as it progressed, you can of course jump to any stage you like with the handy drop down menus at the bottom of each page. I'd also like to say that I designed this site at an 1024x768 resolution in 32-bit High Colour . So if there are weird gaps in lines or graphics aren't lined up right ...well, I guess you can go ahead and blame me. Hope you enjoy the course, and HEY! You in the back! Put away that math book! We're studying videogames here!

    191. The Internet: Past, Present And Future - Internet & WWW History
Scholarly article by Jesper Vissing Laursen on the development of the Internet.
    http://www.vissing.dk/inthist.html
Jesper Vissing Laursen "The ARPA theme is that the promise offered by the computer as a communication medium between people, dwarfs into relative insignificance the historical beginnings of the computer as an arithmetic engine" If one were to suggest one single occurrence which led to the creation of the Internet, it would be the Soviet Union's launch of the Sputnik satellite in 1957. This seminal incident in space exploration caused then American President Dwight David Eisenhower to appoint MIT President James A. Killian as a presidential assistant for science, and subsequently sparked the creation of a new department within the Department of Defense, named the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). ARPA was the answer to the rising American Cold War paranoia about military inferiority, fuelled not least by the Sputnik success. The agency was designed to perform long term high risk/high payoff research and development, and in this context placed great emphasis on the development of the at that time fledgling computer technology. It was felt by ARPA that too many resources had been allocated by public and private research in order to procure short-term advances in computer hardware and software. Instead, the Agency realized that "machines needed greater capability to interact with each other to gather relevant information, solve problems, anticipate data requirements, communicate effectively across distances, present information visually, and do all this automatically."

ComLink :: mkgraphic@aol.com MK Graphic Design or Article List Basic vs Applied Research in Graphic Design
by Michael Kroeger This article is written in response to the confusion in the design industry between basic and applied research. The implied value in graphic design is to train our students to perform 'real' projects as opposed to theoretical exercises. We continue to give our students basic problems to encourage them to think on their own. It is the charge of industry to supply the next generation of students (future designers) with the applied research in the field. The commercial designers are better equiped and funded to supply this end of the students' education. The chart below is an indication of the aspects of what some of the differences are between basic and applied research. The education community can supply only part of the education needs of todays students. With ever increasing technology needs not being met at the university, the students must rely on internships and job opportunities supplied by the design industry. Basic Applied Theory: color, form, composition, content
