Family and Consumer Sciences Program
The graduate program in Family and Consumer Sciences is designed to provide advanced specialized leadership in various professions, and to further professional competencies for students in dietetics, extension, business, industry and education. The graduate program in Family and Consumer Sciences is designed to accomplish the following basic purposes:
  • to develop leadership for family and consumer sciences professions; to extend competencies for family and consumer sciences specialists in dietetics, extension, business, industry and education; and to prepare promising students for doctoral study.
  • The curriculum is organized to permit advanced study and research in the following areas:
    • Clothing Family Economics, Equipment and Management Nutrition and Dietetics Family and Consumer Sciences Education Interior Design Textiles
    Authorized degree program: Master of Arts degree with a major in Family and Consumer Sciences.

    Educational programs in Family Development and Resource Management help individuals and families become healthy, productive and financially secure. Two major categories are managing family resources and fostering successful family relationships. These programs teach skills in critical thinking and decision making. Fort Bend County Focus In Fort Bend County, Extension programs strive to:
    • Work with other family-serving agencies and organizations to foster families and communities that are supportive of the people who live in them Increase parenting skills such as understanding, motivating, nurturing, and guiding one's children; and serving as an advocate as needed Improve skills in using information for increasing family communication, resolving family conflicts and making effective decisions Provide support for adult development and for family members facing the physical, emotional and psychological challenges of aging Assist families in making food, shelter and clothing choices consistent with their resources

    The Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association (FCSEA) is a voluntary organization of family and consumer sciences educators and others associated with or interested in family and consumer sciences instruction in schools and colleges. Family and consumer sciences educators are dedicated to helping each individual help him or herself through a better understanding and control of family and community life. They work to improve the quality of family and consumer sciences instruction and to broaden the scope of the curriculum. FCSEA works with other organizations in the area of public policy through the Family and Consumer Sciences Coalition. FCSEA meets during the ACTE and AAFCS conventions. Its officers are elected by a mail ballot of the active membership. FCSEA is a non-governance afflilate of the National Education Association Association for Career and Technical Education , and American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
