Admission is open to all students with a bachelor of science degree who meet the general requirements set by the graduate school. The M.S. in Family and Consumer Sciences degree allows a student to focus on one of the four areas or to take course work across any combination of the four areas of specialization. The student, major professor, and graduate committee determine the program of study and research project which meets the needs of the individual student. Students may be required to take more than the minimum of 30 hours, either because they have to satisfy prerequisites for some courses, or because a students committee determines that more than 30 hours will be needed for the student to reach her or his professional objectives. An interdisciplinary program in food science/human nutrition leading to a Master of Science degree is available within the College of Agriculture. Cooperating curricula include food science (Department of Animal Science) and human nutrition and food (Department of Family and Consumer Sciences). The program allows a student to pursue graduate studies in areas such as food microbiology, human nutrition and metabolism, meat science, food product development and food chemistry. Entering students should have strong backgrounds in the biological sciences.

It is also the study of the relationship of food and drink to health and disease, especially in determining an optimal diet.
Overview
As recently as the 1960s doctors told their patients that nutrition had little to do with their health. Now we know otherwise: "you are what you eat!" More specifically, in humans, the matter which comprises the cells of the body (except those cells produced before birth) is acquired from food in the stomach. Not all the food matter in the stomach can be used for the body; the matter that is left over as waste is removed.

Overview
Family and Consumer Sciences education is designed to empower people to strike a balance between home and career. The name for this discipline was recently changed from "home economics" to better reflect the dimension of preparing students for high-demand occupations. Family and Consumer Sciences programs enable students to acquire broad, transferable skills for employment and personal use as well as job-specific skills in occupations related to children, the elderly, food production and management, hospitality, education, resource management, and social and human services. All students face the challenge of living and working in a high-tech society. As life becomes more complex, it is increasingly important to assist people to meet the basic human needs of daily living, to think critically, to take responsibility for their own lives and to respect the rights of others in the family, the workplace and the community.
