At the same time, the association changed its name to the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and organized to become known as the source and voice for strong families. The field as it is today originated from Home Economics; in the U. S. it began at land grant universities after women appealed to have their own niche while the men studied things like agriculture. Ironically, many of the people most skilled in home management have never studied Family and Consumer Sciences formally. Welcome to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Located in Gooch Hall, the department has 6 full-time professors and serves 135 undergraduate and 41 graduate majors. T he Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The didactic program in dietetics is approved by the American Dietetics Association. The undergraduate curriculum prepares students for the bachelor of science in family and consumer sciences sciences. The major is called family and consumer sciences and offers four concentrations. The student will select one of the following concentrations: U T Martin family and consumer sciences students are active in the Professional and Graduate Student Section of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the Fashion Merchandising Association, Interior Design Group and the Student Dietetic Association. These organizations provide opportunities for students to interact socially and professionally. Mission:

Graduate Programs of Study
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers a master of science degree in family and consumer sciences. This degree is open to a person holding a baccalaureate degree from a four-year college or university, regardless of the degree. The student must have satisfactorily completed prerequisites to advanced courses in the selected areas in family and consumer sciences. Graduates of curricula other than family and consumer sciences may have acquired sufficient backgrounds in related courses and may be accepted. Each applicant's request for admission will be evaluated for the need for undergraduate prerequisites. The master's degree in family and consumer sciences offers two option: general family and consumer sciences and dietetics. The first option is generalist in nature and based on a selected range of comprehensive courses. Students under this option may choose an emphasis in child and family studies or food science/nutrition or remain generalist. The dietetics option incorporates a Dietetic Internship (DI) which offers graduates of didactic programs in dietetics a post baccalaureate , clinically based practicum. For either option, students may select the thesis or non-thesis route. The objectives of the Master's Program in Family and Consumer Sciences are to:
  • Serve the needs of students within the region and within the state who desire advanced subject matter for personal and professional reasons.

    The mission of the Division of Family Studies and Human Development is to contribute to the knowledge and understanding of family processes, interpersonal relationships, and human development through scholarly inquiry, graduate and undergraduate education, and research-based outreach. The undergraduate program offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in Family Studies and Human Development (FSHD) or Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FACS). FSHD majors are prepared to pursue careers and graduate training in fields such as human services, social policy, community and public health, counseling, social work, medicine, gerontology, and criminal justice/law. FACS majors are prepared to teach in school, health or social service settings. The graduate program offers a Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree with an emphasis in Family Studies and Human Development. The doctoral program prepares social and behavioral scientists for research, teaching, and other professional careers in a variety of academic, government, and private-sector settings. There is also an opportunity to pursue a Masters degree with an emphasis in Family and Consumer Sciences Education (MS FACS).

    Family Science The Family Science specialization focuses on interpersonal relationships and human development from infancy to old age. Students are introduced to theories of development for families and individuals and they learn to identify the characteristics of healthy individuals, marriages, and families. With this knowledge, students prepare to use information from their course work to help individuals and families solve problems and strengthen their relationships. Graduates generally work in public and private social service agencies providing services to children, youth, families, and the elderly. They may also work in cooperative extensions, in hospitals, or for employee assistance programs. The Family Science specialization is offered fully on the UNO campus. Career Opportunities Family Financial Management In Family Financial Management, students learn to identify, analyze, and evaluate family financial needs, problems, and behavior. The major also helps students deal with consumer decision-making and economics. Students learn to analyze how individuals and families use resources to achieve their desired quality of life. Majors find employment in consumer affairs, consumer relations, sales management, consumer advocacy, financial planning and counseling, housing administration, employee assistance programs, and cooperative extension. The Family Financial Management specialization can be completed entirely on the UNO campus.
