81. CONCENTRATIONS - ETHNIC STUDIES
ethnic studies Concentration. Application Procedure The ethnic studies concentration is administered by the ethnic studies Advisory Committee.
http://www.davidson.edu/academic/concentrations/ethnic.html
Ethnic Studies Concentration
The Ethnic Studies concentration provides students with an understanding of the forces that have made African Americans, Native Americans, and Latinos integral, and yet distinct, groups in American society. This interdisciplinary course of study, offered by departments in the humanities and social sciences, introduces analytical skills that are required to understand the cultural, economic and political factors, both historical and modern, that have shaped these ethnic groups. The inclusion of theories of ethnicity and race assists students in developing the critical tools necessary to understand and evaluate issues of democracy and cultural pluralism in a complex country and world. The concentration also encourages comparative study of ethnicity, thus emphasizing that the study of ethnic identity and relations is a part of understanding the human experience. Requirements
  • 1. Completion of six courses to include:
    • a. Soc 205 (Race and Ethnic Relations)
    • b. Three courses from one track and one course from a second track. At least two of these four courses must be at the 300 level or higher. An approved independent study course may substitute for one of these four courses.
    • Africana Track
      • Ant 221 (The Caribbean Experience)
      • Ant 222 (African Civilizations)
      • Cis 328 (Afro-Caribbean Literature)

      • Eng 282 (African American Literature)
      • Eng 394 (Cis 394) (Caribbean Literature)

The Ethnic Studies Movement At Columbia University Marcel Agueros (CC'96) had constructed a Web Page concerning his thoughts on the events leading to and of April 1996. It was very detailed and includes some articles and press releases. It is in the process of being updated and will hopefully be up soon. If you have any other questions or would like to talk to some alums that were a part of that drive and are still interested, you can contact Patricia Merino (CC'95) who is president of the Ethnic Studies Alumni Association or Elbert Garcia (CC'97).

Each student must satisfy the ethnic studies requirement for graduation. Through approved courses, it is hoped that graduates will come to appreciate, understand, value and react appropriately to American cultural diversity. Through the study of American cultures other than those from a European origin, we hope to discourage racism and thus reduce its effects. With careful planning, some of the general education courses and ethnic studies courses may overlap. That is, you may take a course that meets both general education and ethnic studies requirements. While the credits you earn count once toward graduation, they may be used to satisfy requirements in these two areas. Ethnic studies courses are coded ES-A, ES-B, or ES-C. ESA courses deal directly with an American culture. ESB courses integrate appreciation and understanding of American cultural groups into course subject matter. ESC courses include a significant multicultural component secondary to other course goals. Students are required to take either:
  • Two ES-A courses OR One ES-A course and one ES-B course OR One ES-A course and two ES-C courses OR One ES-B course and two ES-C courses OR Three ES-B courses OR Two ES-B courses and one ES-C course

    AMERICAN ETHNIC STUDIES
W ake Forest University offers an Interdisciplinary Minor in American Ethnic Studies. The primary purpose of the Interdisciplinary Minor is to increase students understanding of ethnicity and race in the United States. The Interdisciplinary Minor in American Ethnic Studies is open to all degree-seeking undergraduate students and is designed to be taken concurrently with the student's major. The Program is especially appealing because courses may be counted toward other general and specific graduation requirements in the student's major. Being multi-disciplinary, the American Ethnic Studies Program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to understand the viewpoints and research methodologies of various social and behavioral science disciplines regarding ethnicity and/or race. The Program offers scholarly study of distinctive social, political, cultural and historical experiences of ethnic and racial groups in American society. Ethnic Studies Resources

In particular, the program emphasizes the experiences, both past and present, of four groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans. In addition, Non-Hispanic White ethnic groups are also examined as they relate to the founding of the American Republic, community development and contemporary society.

This research guide focuses on the sources you may find useful in researching issues in Ethnic Studies. This guide is not a comprehensive list of research materials, but it will give you an overview of the sources you should consider as you plan your research, as well as some starting places for different materials. Planning an effective research strategy will be essential to the success of your paper since many of the familiar legal research tools, such as annotated codes, legal encyclopedias and West key numbers will not provide access to the best research materials for these issues. Your research will be highly interdisciplinary in nature and may lead you to materials in social sciences, economics, sociology, history and public policy, as well as law. Empirical data, such as income, population and/or immigration statistics may be relevant to your research and analysis. The web sites listed in this guide under "Journal Abstracts and Indexes"

Ethnic Studies a suggested course of study
After graduation, it is not uncommon that we find ourselves in careers that involve interacting with others in meaningful ways. In these settings, we are expected to interact with co-workers who may have very different backgrounds, values and belief systems than our own. In today's increasingly global society, employers are looking to hire those people who are most equipped to deal with our human diversity. Ethnic Studies is an academic discipline that assists in making students more marketable, by combining critical thinking skills, with an ability to understand and value difference from a social justice perspective. Because of these skills, students with a foundation in Ethnic Studies can be found working in a wide variety of occupations. The National Association for Ethnic Studies defines the discipline as "an interdisciplinary voice for the continuing focused study of race and ethnicity." Ethnic Studies is concerned with how all ethnic groups interact, but focuses primarily on those groups that have been largely ignored as having contributed to the creation and shaping of this country. Ethnic Studies faculty at Lane Community College represent specialists from different disciplinary backgrounds, working together to produce a joint, coordinated, and integrated learning environment. We strive to provide for the interdisciplinary study of historical and contemporary realities of the four major historically subordinated ethnic and racial groups in the United States: the Indigenous First Peoples of North America and the Pacific, people of African and Asian ancestry, Chicanas/os and Latinas/os. In addition, our faculty encourage students to critically analyze the intersections of race and ethnicity with other variables such as: ability, class, gender identity, religion, sexual orientation, nationalism, and globalization.

    http://www.socialism.com/currents/defend.htm
May 6, 1999 Defend and Extend Ethnic Studies!
In 1969, the Third World Student Strikes exploded on U.S. campuses. Students, faculty, community and radical activists won Ethnic Studies departments, affirmative action, and Educational Opportunity Programs. Now 30 years later, students are once again on the move, fighting to reverse the constant cutbacks that threaten to decimate these hard-won gains. We must not let the University of California and its greedy corporate cohorts get away with stifling the growing movement for multi-cultural, multi-issue equality on campus and around the world. Students Spark Outraged Resistance This spring, after trying to negotiate with the UC Berkeley administration, students have organized and are currently engaged in a hunger strike to demand: increased funding for Ethnic Studies; the hiring of tenure track professors; student participation in decision making; the creation of a multi-cultural student center, an Ethnic Studies Research Center, a community mural, and, finally, the dropping of all charges against students arrested for defending Ethnic Studies. By sending in the police on May 4 to arrest 83 peaceful demonstrators at the cowardly hour of 3:00am, and by refusing to meet their demands, Chancellor Berdahl has declared war on the campus community that is fighting the institutional censorship of people of color and their histories. UC Reveals Its True Colors The mission of Ethnic Studies is to provide the truthful history of the vast contributions of men and women of color to U.S. economic, political, and social life, and that truth is dangerous - at least to the ruling class. A powerful institution and big business, UC is not committed to education which fully represents the diversity of California. Nor is it interested in building student leadership through democracy in decision-making. UC is interested in maintaining the status quo. The political awakening and economic advancement of students, especially students of color, is their worst nightmare.
